Occupational Health and Safety Specialist

Reporting to the Manager, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Services, the OHS Specialist provides effective and efficient delivery of OHS Services across all Sheridan campuses. The incumbent performs investigations, inspections and audits; develops and delivers training programs; provides OHS advice to managers and; provides ongoing technical guidance to the OHS Coordinators situated at each of Sheridan's campuses.
The incumbent provides expertise, analysis and recommendations to support the achievement of organizational health and safety goals, and supports the Manager to develop, implement and monitor Sheridan's Occupational Health and Safety Management System.
The incumbent ensures adherence to Health and Safety related policies, procedures and protocols and; ensures compliance with the OHS Act and its regulations, the Environmental Protection Act and other relevant legislation.
**What You’ll Be Doing**
- Researching, developing, implementing and enforcing policies, procedures, and programs in the OHS portfolio from a corporate perspective, and works with clients to do the same at the operating department level
- Overseeing safety action plans and programs to ensure College wide consistency, achievement of OHS goals and establishment of a long-term safety culture
- Ensuring practices and standards are in compliance with regulatory and legislative requirements
- Identifying needs in OHS requirements and organizes changes to address the identified needs. This often incorporates the need for the development of detailed proposals or business cases, including cost benefit analysis, for affecting change in OHS Program or service delivery
- Designing, developing, delivering (or sources) and evaluates programs, training or resources to drive compliance and awareness
- Implementing OHS learning programs to ensure that all Sheridan personnel are aware of their responsibilities under the OHS legislation, (including but not limited to new employee orientation, Supervisor Health and Safety Training, WHMIS training, slip and fall arrest programs, and back care programs - safe lifts and carries)
- Providing advice and guidance to client departments in the development and implementation of employee programs and practices that promote employee health and safety;
- Providing advice and guidance to Faculties and Departments regarding specific OHS needs
- Working in close partnership with Operating Departments and Faculties to promote safety and health practices in the workplace. Resolves operational matters where OHS related issues arise or where employees are not compliant with College practices;
- Assessing options, proposals, or business cases relating to OHS to determine feasibility of proposed changes. Where needed, initiates research into strategic business issues to identify long term development opportunities
- Coordinating third party service providers for expertise relating to specific programs within the portfolio (hygienists, ergonomists, waste management specialists, trainers, first aid
- Analyzing trends emerging from incident investigations. Identifies the systemic issue/concerns, prepares recommendations to address and remove the systemic problem and works with the departmental manager to address the root cause;
- Providing input and support to the Supervisor / HR Business Partners when the root cause of an accident investigation sheds light on a safety violation that may require discipline; Acts as a witness regarding the event that gave rise to the incident. Supports managers in their corrective actions/sanctions in matters determined culpable in this regard;
- Participating in other activities and projects as assigned

- 4-year bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety or related field
- 5-years of sound experience in the field of Occupational Health and Safety (equivalency to be considered)
- Experience conducting workplace violence investigations and violence threat assessments
- Expert knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations
- Familiarity with the Environmental Protection Act, the Fire Code, the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, the Building Code and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act
