Position Overview
The Preparator & Facility Operations position performs exhibit installation including minor carpentry for display creation and repair, painting, and artifact handling, as well as program and event set-up and tear down. Provides physical site coordination for exhibits, events and programs. Plays a key role in implementation of all aspects of exhibits and programs by providing creative, technical, and physical support to Curatorial staff. Also maintains technology and lighting hardware and remains current on latest technological and exhibition practices. Performs minor facility, grounds and equipment maintenance as directed, and assists with the same through external contractors and suppliers. Assist at all museums, gallery and archives sites as required and directed.
**Responsibilities**:
Although based out of Lambton Heritage Museum this position works regularly at both Lambton Heritage Museum and the Oil Museum of Canada, and occasionally the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery and Lambton County Archives.
**Exhibit/Program Support**:
- Provide installation design and facility expertise in a safe and efficient manner.
- Build and install exhibits under the direction of the Facility & Exhibitions Supervisor.
- Build artifact and exhibit mounts and supports.
- Artifact handling and movement for use in exhibits and programs
- Implement the physical preparation and installation of exhibitions and programs.
- Exhibit wall construction and repair
- Travel offsite as needed to pick up artifacts for transport back to the Museum or pick up and deliver displays to community events.
- Coordinate and move artifacts within the main building and between buildings on site.
**Technology Coordination**:
- Ensure exhibit and event lighting is appropriate for artifacts being exhibited and ensure lighting systems are maintained.
- Inventory and track all media equipment, tools, and installation hardware ensuring supplies are in stock and equipment is functional.
- Provide general maintenance of equipment as it pertains to media, exhibits and presentations.
- Responsible to remain current on latest technological and exhibition practices.
- Understand, set up and maintain all sound systems in the buildings.
**Facility Support and Maintenance**:
- Assists the County Facilities Services Coordinator and the Facility & Exhibitions Supervisor to ensure the proper operation and maintenance of the facility, grounds and equipment through external suppliers including:
- interior and exterior building maintenance
- Monitoring building and maintenance systems to identify issues as they arise and implement solutions.
- coordinate various trades for the maintenance of the facility, as directed.
- Monitor and ensure effective operation of the Building Automation Systems to control heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems that maintain appropriate temperature and humidity.
- Perform minor building repairs/maintenance (cleaning, painting, repairing, change lights, mount displays to walls, exterior grounds maintenance, etc.)
**Site Coordination**:
- Act as on-site contact for contractors and suppliers. Coordinate and assist in the set up for lectures, films, meetings, receptions, and other events - move tables, chairs, artifacts, equipment.
- Coordinate site set up and logistics for external rentals of site.
- Set up and take down of furniture and equipment for various events.
- Provide input to and implement appropriate policies and procedures to ensure the security of Museum artifacts and assets at all three facilities.
- Provide input to and implement the Emergency Response Plan and Operations Manual for LHM, OMC and LCA.
Health & Safety
- Ensure H&S requirements are met for all contractor, facility and equipment usage and maintenance.
- Performs all H&S reporting requirements.
- Implement appropriate procedures to ensure the safety of patrons, visitors, staff and volunteers.
- Support the Workplace Health and Safety Inspection process by following up with measures to control hazards identified, as directed.
