The Ottawa Hospital is looking to recruit numerous Hospital Support Aides for immediate employment during the school year

This position is temporary until March 30, 2023.

**What you will do**:
**1. Customer Service**:

- Effectively communicates and interacting with patients, family members, visitors, staff, and volunteers in a courteous and professional manner:

- Greets patients in a positive and supportive manner requesting if they need assistance of any kind;
- Acts as a runner within the hospital;
- Understands the culture of, and roles in hospital settings;
- Supports IPAC process and procedures;
- Understands how to safely support patients living with disabilities, including, but not limited to mobility issues, visual deficits, etc.

**2. Patient Care Areas**:

- Provide routine tasks that support patients with their daily activities;
- Assists at mealtimes and during nutritional breaks by helping with set up after the delivery of the trays;
- Supports patients in managing their personal belongings;
- Assists the unit with the coordination of virtual family visits i.e., coordinating times and setting up zoom calls, etc. to alleviate the volume of calls to the units by family members;
- Assists patients with devices (cell phones/tablets) to enable patients to communicate with their families and friends;
- Assists the care team in facilitating and monitoring visitors (essential care providers);
- Provides companionship to patients while reflecting the preferences of the patient;
- Provides observation support of designated transition patients;
- Listens for monitor alarms and call bells.

**3. Administrative and Operational**:

- Participates in team huddles and meetings, as required;
- Communicates safety, patient and environmental concerns related concerns with supervisor;
- Retrieves equipment and accesses unit supplies, as required;
- Completing assigned clerical/data entry/administrative duties, as appropriate;
- Attends in-service education sessions and workshops as directed;.
- Completing assigned clerical and data entry tasks.

**4. Operates in compliance with policies, procedures, and regulations as defined by the hiring hospital**:

- Conducts duties in accordance with policies and procedures of unit as well as, government regulations, laws, and policies;
- Understands and follows all health and safety policies and procedures. Works safely to reduce the risk of injury to self, other staff members and patients. Promptly reports all actual or potential hazardous situations or injuries to immediate supervisor;
- Participates in health and safety and Infection Prevention and Control training as required Maintains confidentiality of patients’ personal information;
- Good understanding of infection control practices.

**5. Other**:

- Organize and tidy unit area;
- Performs other related duties as required.

**Basic Requirements**:
**1. Qualifications**:

- Successful completion of high school;
- Current Basic Cardiopulmonary Life Support (BCLS)

**2. Skills & Abilities**:

- Must have good judgement and interpersonal skills:

- Must be sensitive and empathetic to the needs of the patients;
- Must be able to communicate effectively with patients, visitor, and others;
- Commitment to maintain dignity and self-esteem of patients and families in delivery of care;
- Knowledge of body mechanics, and safe patient lift and transfer practices;
- Ability to work within an interdisciplinary team;
- Ability to work under pressure, request assistance when required, and to adapt to change rapidly.

**3. Key Considerations**:

- Work requires constant standing and walking, some bending, twisting, and lifting of light supplies;
- May be exposed to communicable disease.

**4. Preference**:

- Preference will be given to those with special interest/education in health care related field.
