**The opportunity**:
The University of Manitoba is looking for an Academic Advisor/Awards Coordinator. This position will be responsible for meeting with individual student portfolios to discuss program plans during registration periods, and assessing students’ progress and program requirements. The Academic Advisor/Awards Coordinator is also maintains student records, complies annual award reports, and identifies potential awards.

**The qualifications and experience we’re looking for**:

- A University Bachelor's degree required.
- A degree in the area of Agricultural and Food Sciences or in Life Sciences preferred.
- At least two years of directly related academic advising experience required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of theory relevant to academic advising is required.
- Understand academic advising approaches and strategies, including articulation of a personal philosophy of academic advising is required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the characteristics, needs and experiences of students is required.
- Familiarity with Awards Processing is an asset.
- A thorough knowledge of student services offered on the Fort Garry U of M campus and familiarity with the Fort Garry U of M campus is preferred.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Must have excellent interpersonal and time management skills.
- Must be able to multi-task, establish and adapt priorities, working effectively under pressure.
- Facilitation of individual and group problem solving, decision making, planning and goal setting is required.
- Employ culturally inclusive active listening techniques including paraphrasing, reflecting and asking open-ended questions for the purpose of clarity and rapport building.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills required.
- Must have excellent word processing, spreadsheet and data management skills using Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Access and in working with website maintenance.
- Experience working with UM Systems such as Aurora, Banner, UM Learn is preferred.
- Adaptability in the face of fast-paced technological changes is required.
- Ability to demonstrate empathy: perceive, evaluate and effectively respond to emotions in others; show sensitivity and understand others' perspectives
- Ability to work collaboratively with others and paying attention to how the team supports its' members
- Ability to support students to build skills related to social connection, resilience, coping, personal capacity for health and other dimensions of well-being is required.
- Ability to identify when and with whom to implement appropriate crisis management and intervention responses, including awareness of campus resources and processes is required.
- Ability to maintain an appropriate degree of confidentiality that follows applicable legal requirements, facilitates development of trusting relationships and recognizes when confidentiality should be broken to protect the student or others is required.
- Demonstrate adequate understanding of the complexity of elements important to members of another culture in relation to history, values, religion, politics, communication styles, economy, or beliefs and practices is required.
- Use inclusive, respectful language in all communication is required.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
