**The Role**
- The Disability Management Specialist acts with considerable independence, discretion, judgment and initiative in providing advice and case management for the rehabilitation of ill/injured employees through the development, negotiation and implementation of rehabilitation, vocational rehabilitation, return to work plans and workplace accommodation agreements. The Disability Management Specialist provides leadership to the College as a whole in planning, developing, promoting and evaluating the effectiveness of the College’s disability management plans. The Disability Management Specialist works closely with the rest of the HR team to further the initiatives in the College’s Strategic and HR Plans.
- While this role primarily reports to the Manager, Employee Health and Benefits, there is also a dotted line reporting relationship to the Director, Employee and Labour Relations for issues relating to employee or labour relations.

**Responsibilities**
- Under the general direction of the Manager, Employee Health and Benefits, the
- **_Disability Management Specialist_** is accountable for the following:
- Performs case management for the rehabilitation of ill/injured employees through the development, negotiation and implementation of rehabilitation, vocational rehabilitation, return to work plans and duty to accommodate agreements. Monitors the effectiveness of such agreements and plans.
- Manages sick and disability benefit claims for all eligible employee groups at the College.
- Provides direction to, and works with employees, union representatives and the College’s benefits carriers in the development, negotiation and implementation of disability/case management plans and agreements.
- Implements such agreements and plans to ensure both a safe and durable return to work for College employees and cost-effective disability management practices on behalf of the College.
- Ensures appropriate medically-supported workplace accommodations for employees with disabilities.
- Provides consultation to employees regarding available disability management services, the dispute resolution process and responsibilities in the workplace accommodation process.
- Establishes contact with employees who are ill, injured, or requesting medical accommodation and serves as the focal point for centralized communication and coordination of the accommodation/treatment/rehabilitation plan.
- Coordinates the appropriate participants for the development of individual return to work plans, and ensures that process and outcome are evaluated.
- Represents the College and its interests in meetings with the employee, the Union and/or third-party provider, and in identified cases proceeding to a third party and/or other quasi-judicial tribunals.
- Remains current with workplace legislation and jurisprudence, disability guidelines and treatment protocols through research and investigation, as directed.
- Identifies systemic barriers to return to work and assists departments to identify suitable transition work for ill/injured employees, and/or work that meets an employee’s accommodation needs.
- Researches, implements, promotes, and evaluates instructional programs and training materials to assist managers, supervisors, union representatives and employees in such areas as return to work planning, workplace accommodation and employee attendance support programs.
- Provides assistance to the Director, Employee and Labour Relations for special projects.
- Researches, analyzes, evaluates and recommends disability plan designs to ensure that programs are current, competitive and in compliance with legal requirements and meet the needs of employees and the College.
- Collects and analyzes data and prepares applicable reports and proposals.
- Represents the department and the College on a variety of selected internal and external committees, including co-chairing the joint union and management rehabilitation and early intervention committees.
- Performs other related duties as required.
