**About Us**:
The Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) is dedicated to safeguarding fire and building safety. Our core functions encompass developing essential policies and programs to uphold and enforce fire safety principles. We actively advise multiple levels of government on matters pertaining to fire protection, working closely with fire service partners throughout the province.
With a team of approximately 20 skilled professionals, our primary focus lies in supporting provincial and municipal partners in their efforts to achieve stringent building and fire safety standards. Additionally, we diligently collaborate with the Joint Municipal Fire Services Committee, ensuring the implementation of effective recommendations to enhance fire services.
**About Our Opportunity**:
We have an exciting opportunity for you as the Building Code Coordinator for the Office of the Fire Marshal. This key role involves spearheading the establishment of policies, regulations, and programs governing construction across the province. You'll be at the forefront of ensuring that buildings in Nova Scotia meet the highest standards of safety and compliance.
Collaboration is key in this position, as you'll work closely with various government departments, agencies, and stakeholder associations at both provincial and national levels.
**Primary Accountabilities**:
As the Building Code Coordinator, you'll have the opportunity to influence construction practices, ensure safety and accessibility, and foster collaboration across governmental, industry, and public sectors. You’ll make meaningful impacts on the building standards by:
- Providing technical and policy advice on building standards and regulations to the Nova Scotia Building Advisory Committee, municipalities, stakeholder groups, and the public.
- Developing strategic policies and positions for building codes at provincial, national, and international levels.
- Advising on Provincial Building Code, Plumbing Code, and technical standards.
- Overseeing the review and approval of new construction materials and systems.
- Ensuring building codes reflect provincial needs for health, safety, and accessibility.
- Monitoring and reviewing processes for building standards development and enforcement.
- Preparing and administering proposed amendments to regulations and legislation.
- Conducting important research, and evaluating changes to National Building Code as well as provincial amendments.
- Representing provincial interests nationally and internationally on building standards and regulations.
- Participating in interdepartmental and inter-agency committees and task forces.
**Qualifications and Experience**:
You are a Professionally registered Architect or Engineer (or eligible for registration in Nova Scotia) with a focus on building sciences. You have at least six (6) years of related or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Red Seal certification in related trades such as plumbing and electrical is considered an asset.
You must demonstrate the following:
- Comprehensive understanding of Building Code, Farm Code, Fire Code, Energy Code, and Plumbing Code as well as regulations.
- Ability to facilitate and present on the adoption of new codes.
- Proficiency in policy development, with the capability to analyze regulations and develop strategic policies.
- Ability to read and interpret complex technical documents, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards.
- Experience in preparing briefing notes for stakeholders and decision-makers, summarizing key information and recommendations concisely and effectively.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the capacity to convey technical information clearly and persuasively.
- Detail-oriented approach with a focus on accuracy and precision in all aspects of work.
- Collaborative mindset, capable of working effectively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders to achieve common goals.
- Proactive mindset with an ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities effectively.
**Equivalency**:
The OFM recognizes equivalent combinations of training, education, and experience, providing opportunities for individuals with diverse backgrounds to contribute their skills and expertise. Equivalencies include but are not limited to:
- A completed related diploma in Engineering Technology (construction) or Architectural Technician (construction) and eight (8) years of related experience
- Qualified Building Official Level 2 and eight (8) years of related experience
