**About the Position**

**Reporting to the Facilities Manager, Department of Mechanical Engineering,** requires a Technician to work with our students in our project laboratories (machine shops). This position will complement our existing technical staff and provide assistance with the setup and maintenance our 2nd, 3rd and 4th year undergraduate laboratory experiments. The incumbent will also assist students in our project laboratories to build projects using common machine shop equipment such as manual milling machines, lathes and drill presses in addition to sheet metal fabricating, wood working, welding and CNC machining.

**Core Areas of Accountability**
- Assist students in preparing machine set-ups.
- Provide technical support related to machining, machine operation, and tool path planning.
- Perform the set-up, operation, and troubleshooting of machines and machining processes.
- Develop and deliver a safety training program for new users of the machines.
- Develop detailed machine use and maintenance plans as per operator guidelines.
- Modify and adapt fabrication, maintenance procedures, and equipment to meet specialized requirements.
- Plan routine maintenance schedules for equipment.
- Collaborate with the course instructor to determine how the experiment will be designed to align with and reinforce the defined learning concept
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of a facility, laboratory or multiple laboratories.
- Design, fabricate and assemble new and review and modify existing machining processes in consultation with the course instructor.
- Design, build and operate nonstandard equipment, test systems, and devices for use in the facility.
- Design and fabricate instrumentation required for undergraduate teaching.
- Provide technical support and assistance to students and instructors.
- In consultation with the course instructor, conduct selected literature searches connected with undergraduate education.
- Develop, implement and maintain Standard Operating Procedures for equipment and experiments.
- Log incident reports and adhere to safety policies by performing and keeping record of regular safety audits as delegated by the supervisor.
- Exchange technical and scientific information with colleagues, faculty, and students.
- Responsible for keeping machine shop facilities, equipment, and area in a clean, tidy and safe working order.
- Attend and participate in regular meetings with students to ensure machining processes are understood and conducted accordingly.
- Remove waste in accordance with applicable waste handling guidelines.
- Operate a variety of power tools such as lathes, milling machines, drill presses, soldering irons and other power equipment as necessary.
- Operate nonstandard equipment, test systems, and devices, connected with selected areas of the department.
