Under general direction, the Indigenous Services Coordinator is responsible for providing cultural support to former students and their families involved with Indian Day Schools (IDS). The Indigenous Services Coordinator completes administrative duties and promotes community education associated with Indian Day School support.
**Job Duties**:
**1. Provide cultural support to former students and families involved with the IDS**
- Coordinate and participate in family cultural support and grief circles in a collaborative working environment to include community support services and Noojmowin Teg wellness services
- Provide advocacy and support to ensure referrals are directed for appropriate service support
- Provide weekly follow up meetings to former IDS students and families
- Coordinate well-being healing events (workshops, presentations, healer clinics) and liaise with available health support services for the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing to IDS individuals and their families
**2. Perform administrative duties in support of the program’s goals and objectives**
- Review existing workplan provided and obtain approval on any required changes to address the needs of the program for the fiscal year
- Assist clients through a coordinated effort with available resources and utilizing the IDS website, in the preparation of Indian Day School claim forms
- Input client information into electronic medical records database (PSS)
- Compile various monthly program reports
- Assist with administrative support for traditional healing events and clinics
- Attend Health Canada sponsored Indian Day School events to provide cultural, traditional and counselling support i.e.: TRC’s (Truth Reconciliation Commission Events)
**3. Provide community education on IDS history and the effect on Indigenous people**
- Deliver IDS history to educators and students
- Attend career fairs and deliver presentations to former IDS students and families
- Liaise, consult and make referrals to other Community Health-Care Support Providers to advocate for collaborative health and wellness care delivery for former IDS students and their families
- Provide cultural support knowledge to other employees to assist as required (i.e.: presentations)
**4. Support mental wellness for IDS survivors and their families**
- Direct outreach work to support individuals and families affected by IDS through providing support and counseling.
- Connect individuals to preventative services such as mental health and addiction counseling, harm reduction supplies and referral to other healthcare services
**5. Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the position**
- Engage in professional development to maintain current skills and knowledge regarding the scope of the position
- Assist in the development and implementation of the organization’s quality improvement initiatives
- Network with partner agencies to improve practices, enhance services and move forward shared initiatives relevant to the position
**Requirements**:
**Mandatory**
- Minimum 3-year college diploma in social work, community health, or related field
- One to three years’ previous experience working with the delivery of cultural support programming
- Previous experience working in First Nations communities
- Clear vulnerable sector check
**Knowledge**
- Strong knowledge of Indigenous culture and IDS history
- Strong knowledge of traditional healing teachings, practices and ceremonies
- Knowledge of First Nation communities of Manitoulin Island
- Knowledge of the cultural support services within the Manitoulin Island catchment area
**Skills**
- Skilled in interpersonal relations
- Strong organizational, time management, planning and scheduling skills
- Good team building and collaboration skills in working with other agencies and services in a teamwork environment
- Good interpersonal, listening and communication (written and verbal) skills
**Abilities**
- Ability to engage people to build trust and rapport and deliver supportive counselling
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality and abide by privacy regulations
- Ability to work with mínimal supervision
- Ability to speak or demonstrated willingness to learn the Anishinaabemowin language
**Work Conditions**
- Frequent travel across Manitoulin Island and district Frequent sitting and interruptions within office setting
