The Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society is a highly specialized research, policy and solutions initiative at the University of Toronto that draws on world-class research expertise across multiple academic divisions; regional, national, and international academic partners; and commercial and community organizations and translates research into concrete solutions and policy guidance. We see that the world is in the midst of a massive technological revolution. Artificial intelligence, biotech and other emerging technologies are remaking entire industries and rewiring the way we live, work and organize society. Technology is even challenging our conception of what it means to be human. And it’s all happening at breakneck speed.

This role is currently eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, pursuant to University policies and guidelines, including but not limited to the University of Toronto’s Alternative Work Arrangements Guideline.

**Your opportunity**:
Reporting to the Executive Director of the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology & Society, the Policy Researcher works to implement our policy agenda and maintain alignment with the Institute's short and long-term strategic objectives. You will maintain awareness of emerging advanced technology, conduct policy research and support opportunities to mobilize and amplify policy efforts of the Institute. This position will play a role in supporting and advancing the Institute's policy activities, driven by our mission of ensuring that advanced technologies benefit everyone.

**Your responsibilities will include**:

- Planning and implementing components of research projects
- Researching and analyzing emerging policy issues and trends related to advanced technologies
- Staying apprised of relevant legislative and other policy developments
- Conducting research, literature reviews and jurisdictional scans to inform the development of white papers, policy briefs, roundtables and/or workshops
- Leading and/or coordinating working groups
- Preparing written reports including white papers, policy briefs and roundtable reports
- Analyzing results and preparing statistical reports for research papers
- Building and strengthening relationships with stakeholders and partners of strategic importance
- Promoting and advancing institute interests to industry representatives and government officials
- Serving as a resource on specific issues to a group of specialists.

**Essential Qualifications**:

- Master's Degree in a relevant field or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum five years of related experience analyzing, researching and writing about advanced technologies and related policy issues/trends.
- Experience with project management and multi-stakeholder (e.g., academia, governments, industry, civil society) outreach, engagement and coordination within a policy making environment governments (civil society and industry)
- Working knowledge of emerging trends in advanced technologies, including applicable academic policy discourse and research.
- Experience working with highly confidential information, and interacting with government, civil society and/or the private sector.
- Experience translating information about advanced research technologies and innovations into policy options to a variety of audiences.
- Experience planning and administering workshops and/or roundtables to inform future policy directions.
- Experience establishing, coordinating and/or leading working groups to advance a research agenda.
- Demonstrated ability to bring a wide range of considerations and perspectives to issues.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and research issues, diagnose multi-dimensional problems, and devise appropriate responses or strategies.
- Demonstrated advanced skills in Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and databases.
