**About the Role**:
Reporting to the Manager, Health & Clinical Operations, the Counsellor provides counselling to students to assist with their social/emotional growth and development, to support the students' academic success and over well-being. The Counsellor will support a wide range of issues including an impaired ability to function effectively academically, combined with emotional distress or conflict.
**The Counsellor will**:
- Meet with students to identify and assess students' needs and risks;
- Identify, assess, develop, and implement effective wellness plans;
- Provide short-term counselling including cognitive behavior therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, trauma informed, cross-cultural counselling, and Positive Psychology interventions;
- Provide short-term consultation and support to students with situational and transient or crisis-situational issues and long-term counselling interventions to students experiencing complex mental health difficulties;
- Asses, prepare, and conduct counselling, psychoeducational and psychotherapeutic sessions and groups for students and other Brock partners;
- Provide comprehensive care, life and learning skills to students and their families, as permitted within confidentialities and privacy requirements;
- Liaise with faculty, staff, and student groups on campus relating to student mental health, psychological well-being and student behavior to promote services and ensure a high level of awareness of services provided;
- Participate on committees to assist with developing a culture of student care on campus;
- Develop and deliver special programs, training, and workshops to meet the needs of students, faculty/staff working with students, or community partners;
- Assist students with appropriate academic documentation and support;
- Tack the status and progress of students with complex mental health needs;
- Evaluate outcomes and maintain statistics with respect to student interventions and community education on student mental health issues;
- Maintain private and confidential communication and documentation.
**Key Skills and Experience**:
- Master of Social Work or Master of Counselling Psychology degree;
- Certification, in good standing, with relevant designated professional college;
- Experience providing counselling services, preferably with young adults in a post-secondary setting;
- Applied knowledge in carrying out recommendations from assessments and medical reports;
- Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and with community partners;
- Knowledge of issues relevant to the young adult population and knowledge of relevant legislation in the field (counselling or social work);
- Group therapy skills including knowledge of group process and therapeutic issues;
- Knowledge of records management and privacy requirements (FIPPA, PHIPA) and best practices;
- Effective counselling skills with the ability to effectively provide interventions to a diverse student population, including students experiencing complex mental health difficulties;
- Excellent crisis intervention skills and clinical assessment skills;
- Effective in communicating difficult and sensitive information, in situations where the issues are complex, and communication may be challenging;
- Skilled in evaluating student needs and risks and determining the most appropriate intervention;
- Demonstrates critical thinking skills and takes initiative to improve processes and/or services;
- Flexible and adaptable to changing requirements and circumstances.
**Preferred or Asset Skills**:
- Ability to administer and interpret academic and mental health testing measures to assess for academic strengths and weaknesses and mental health functioning;
- Experience and or training in providing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy;
- Demonstrated success in building rapport and trust with racialized populations seeking mental health services; and
- Experience supervising master's level counselling/psychotherapy students.
**Salary and Total Rewards**:
- Job Grade L, Salary Scale ($62,580-$107,280);
- Target Hiring Range: $62,580-$63,500.
