**Job Summary**

Under the general supervision of the Recreation Coordinator/Manager, the Activity/Recreation Aide carries out established recreation programs. This position also provides input into the planning and evaluation of these programs.

**Responsibilities and Duties**
- Participates in the creation, organization and implementation of therapeutic recreation programs such as arts and crafts, exercise, music, woodworking, cooking, baking, gardening, outings and other social programs.
- Sets up furnishings and/or equipment for activities.
- Teaches, directs and demonstrates activities to residents and volunteers.
- Transfers, porters and ambulates residents to and from activities. Implements ambulation programs as designed/designated by Occupational or Physiotherapy or rehab worker.
- Assists residents at meals, including feeding.
- Assists with admissions, discharges and transfers of residents as required.
- Assists with the promoting and publicizing of daily activities as well as upcoming programs and events through daily announcements, calendars, posters and talking with residents and families.
- Observes and reports changes in a resident’s functional and cognitive behaviour to the designated nursing staff.
- Accompanies residents on outings and during social activities. Checks to ensure residents have appropriate clothing for the activity.
- Provides input into planning and evaluating recreation programs by reporting observations and resident feedback to the Recreation Coordinator/Manager.
- Completes recording/ statistical sheets on activities including attendance at each activity.
- Demonstrates knowledge of fire/emergency procedures and policies of the facility; participates in fire and emergency drills.
- Participates in in-services, staff development programs and serves on committees as needed.
- All safety rules and safe work procedures are adhered to at all times.
- Reports all hazards, incidents, near misses and workplace injuries to the manager immediately and in writing.
- Does not participate in unsafe situations (horseplay), and corrects any unsafe conditions if able.
- Actively participates in all Health and Safety initiatives and make suggestions to improve Workplace Health and Safety.
- Adheres to Infection Control Practices.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

**Qualifications**
- Graduation from a recognized institution with a Recreational/Activity Certification or combination of experience/training.
- 2 years recent related experience working with seniors.
- Must be able to effectively communicate in English both verbal and written
- Holds and Maintains a Valid Class 4 BC driver’s license, as applicable to care home needs
- Maintains Valid Occupational First Aide Level 1 Certificate including CPR “A”
- Maintains Food Safe Level 1
- Maintains Serving It Right Certificate
- Maintains and Complies with Ministry of Justice Criminal Record Check upon hire and every 5 years thereafter
- A negative TB test or chest x-ray within the last six months or ability to pass TB clearance documents.
