**How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team**:
Under the supervision of the Crew Lead, and under the direction of the Research Analyst and the Senior Research Scientist, the Field Assistant, Ecosystem and Climate Science (ECS) is responsible for assisting in the collection and management of urban forest inventory data and safely operating and maintaining equipment.

Overall, this position plays an integral role in the implementation of the tree inventory project occurring in the Region of Peel. This position is responsible for ensuring that data is collected efficiently, safely, effectively, and accurately in the field. The Field Assistant will be in constant communication with their Crew Lead and regularly communicate with the Research Analyst to ensure adherence to project objectives and protocols. The field assistant must also comply with relevant corporate and municipal procedures and by-laws, and provincial and federal legislation.

**Major Responsibilities**:

- Perform the following tasks under general supervision:

- Assist with urban forest field observations, data collection and recording, and tree and invasive plant species identification at a variety of sites across Region of Peel.
- Carry out field data collection on trees (species, DBH, condition, etc.), and invasive species and pests.
- Support the Crew Lead in communicating with site managers and providing project information to the public.
- Accurately record field and project data.
- Field data entry as required.
- Assist in the maintenance of survey equipment, including GPS units.
- Follow the Crew Lead’s direction regarding safety.
- Participate in daily safety meetings to discuss potential hazards and emergency planning.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

**What will you need to succeed**:

- Post-secondary education in forestry, ecology, environmental science or a related field or equivalent experience.
- Valid G or G2 Ontario driver’s license in good standing.
- Familiarity with tree and shrub species and common invasive plant species in the Greater Toronto Area or southern Ontario, or the ability to use a key to identify species.
- Demonstrated ability and aptitude to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work as a team member.
- Ability to publicly represent Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and our partners in a professional manner.
- Familiar with Microsoft Office software programs, specifically Excel.
- Familiarity with basic forest mensuration an asset.
- Familiarity with ArcMap or Google Earth and experience using GPS units are assets.
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act an asset.
- Standard First Aid certificate an asset.
