**Duties**:
The successful applicant will establish lab colonie(s) of mealworms, assess their ability to develop on spoiled grain containing various mycotoxins, and preserve them for chemical analyses. The goal of this research is to determine if, and how, spoiled grain can be used to rear insects as livestock feed (primarily destined to the poultry and aquaculture industries).

The successful applicant will review scientific literature and interpret results within the context of their own research. They will analyse the results of their experiments with appropriate statistical tests. They will present their findings in written and oral format at scientific conferences according to guidelines acceptable to the scientific community. They will publish study results in scientific articles. These collective efforts will form the basis of a M.Sc. thesis.

Work will be located on the Fort Gary campus of the University of Manitoba and be co-supervised by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the University of Manitoba.

**Work environment**:
This is a lab-based position. Work will involve handling insect colonies and exposure to potential allergens (e.g., dust, insect frass and cuticle), grain moulds and mycotoxins. Work may be required during evenings and weekends. The successful applicant will work semi-independently in a research environment as part of a larger team and will interact with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds; e.g., students, research technicians, research scientists.

**Education**:
Currently enrolled or will be enrolled by the date of appointment in a Master’s program at a recognized post-secondary institution with a specialization in Biosystems Engineering or Entomology.

The student must meet the eligibility criteria to enroll at the University of Manitoba.
