Duties will include:
It is estimated that 40% of the time will be curating, cataloguing our exhibits, 30% of the time will be planning Speakers/Workshop Events, 20% of the time will be spent as an ambassador for the Centre, and 10% boat festival activity.

1) Cataloguing of Displays and Inventory - cataloguing/enhancing/completing existing displays and improving our virtual website and social media presence. Presently our Heritage Collection is distributed throughout the facility in one of our 7 exhibits locations: reception displays, mezzanine library, Dwersteg model boats, Cowichan Bay History exhibit,children’s interactive centre, outboard engine display and Tall Ship Display. The result will be a comprehensive list of what resides at the Centre, where it is located and how to best look after the artifacts. This may involve repositioning some of the displays to improve the flow of the Centre. We also have artifacts that need research done to determine their origin and value to the Centre. This would be part of the cataloguing process.

2) Speakers/Workshop Event Planning - research and develop a roster of maritime oriented speakers/workshops for presentation at the Centre.

3) 36th Annual Wooden Boat Festival (the festival is planned for mid July 2024). The Heritage Collection Assistant will join the Festival planning committee to help organize the event.

4) Visitor Experience. Throughout the 13-week work term, the Heritage Collection Assistant will be on relief reception duty, to provide coverage when other staff is not available.

- able to work some Evenings and weekends
- must be aware of, and sensitive to, First Nations culture and heritage
- skills that would be an asset: knowledge of local culture and First Nations history, public speaking, graphic design, Competency with Microsoft Word and Excel, fluency in a second language.

To be eligible, you must be:

- a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada
- legally entitled to work in Canada;
- between 16 and 30 years of age
- enrolled as a full-time or part-time student in the next academic year.
- be able to register in the Young Canada Works
- commit to the full duration of the work assignment

Work Environment and Compensation

Rate of pay is $18.50/hour. The work term is 13 weeks between June 10 and September 7, 2024. The schedule will not be a set weekly schedule. The schedule will be by Agreement under section 37(1) of the Employment Standards Act. Once the student is selected there will be a schedule drawn up in consultation with the student. This will represent

an average of 35 hours per week but will allow for some 3 and 4 day chunks of time off.

The Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre is operated by the Cowichan Wooden Boat Society and has as its mandate to preserve for present and future generations the heritage of BC's maritime past and the culture of wooden boats. We are a living museum, open to the public 7 days per week in the busy summer months, with historical exhibits and displays, a large meeting space with kitchen, a workshop facility for building and restoring wooden boats, a large Patio Portal and meeting space overlooking Cowichan Bay waters, a fleet of row boats, a marine library of over 2,000 books, and an active marine way.

The Centre is a regionally designated a heritage site. We are located in the beautiful seaside community of Cowichan Bay on Vancouver Island. The Centre is on a public transit route to facilitate commuting to and from work, if necessary.
