**About Our Opportunity**:
The public trust and confidence in police and impartial, independent police oversight organizations is of the utmost importance for the administration of justice.
The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is a civilian agency responsible for providing oversight of policing by undertaking independent investigations of serious incidents involving police in the Province of Nova Scotia, ensuring public confidence in police oversight. The expanded operation of SiRT is contemplated pursuant to agreements in principal between the Province of Nova Scotia and each of the Provinces of New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, which upon completion of signed agreements will result in SiRT covering the Maritime Provinces.
The Director is responsible for the operational and administrative management of SiRT.
This position is responsible to the Nova Scotia Minister of Justice and reports administratively to the Nova Scotia Deputy Minister of Justice, while maintaining operational independence.
Any current or former police officer in any jurisdiction is not eligible to be appointed as the Director of SiRT.
**Primary Accountabilities**:
The responsibilities of the Director include but are not limited to:
- Management of all investigative and non-investigative SiRT personnel and resources.
- Direction and oversight of all SiRT investigations, ensuring impartiality, objectivity, independence, high investigative standards, and the timely completeness of investigative and annual reports.
- Administration of the SiRT budget and related financial and administrative matters.
**Qualifications and Experience**:
- A university degree in law or other related discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience in criminal law procedure is required.
- Experience with the law enforcement field other than experience as a police officer would be an asset.
- Several years of progressive experience leading teams of professionals, that includes driving cultural change and change management.
- Demonstrated experience as a champion of equity, diversity and inclusion and building a culture of fairness and accountability.
- Experience developing and maintaining positive relationships with African Nova Scotian, Indigenous and other diverse communities and public interests.
- Progressive experience in financial (budget) and resource management, and dealing with sensitive, complex investigations.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, with superior report writing skills.
- Experience implementing strategic plans is considered an asset.
- French language skills is considered an asset.
- We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

This position is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia and the successful applicant will be expected to travel within Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI, as required, sometimes on short notice with overnight stays.
**Additional Information**:
This is a five-year term, Order in Council (OIC) appointment, with eligibility to be re-appointed for a second five-year term pursuant to the Nova Scotia Police Act.
The salary for this position is currently under review.
