The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) is the national voice for women’s health in Canada with a mission to lead the advancement of women’s health through excellence and collaborative professional practice.
The SOGC has over 4,000 members, comprised of: obstetricians; gynaecologists; family physicians; nurses; midwives and allied health professionals working in the field of sexual and reproductive health.
Since 1944, the SOGC continues to be a leading national and international authority on sexual and reproductive health and on evidence-based training and education. The SOGC leads the development of 12–17 clinical practice guidelines per year and hosts three regional continuing medical education meetings, and an Annual Clinical and Scientific Conference. The SOGC also coordinates and hosts in-person and virtual academic programs for participants at all stages of their career: medical students, residents and practicing health professionals.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Canada (JOGC) is a monthly, peer-reviewed, international medical Journal and is a leading platform for advancing knowledge and practice in women’s health.
The Managing Editor of the JOGC is a pivotal role responsible for overseeing all aspects of the journal’s editorial operations, ensuring the publication of high-quality, peer-reviewed content that advances the field of obstetrics and gynaecology. This includes overseeing the flow of manuscripts from submission to publication, improving upon manuscript management systems, and building and maintaining good working relationships with the Journal’s Editor-in-Chief, the Editorial Board, authors, manuscript reviewers, publishing and translation staff, SOGC staff and other stakeholders. The Managing Editor ensures the journal maintains its reputation for excellence in scientific publishing. This role combines editorial acumen, operational leadership, and strategic vision.
As Managing Editor, you will play a critical role in shaping the future of obstetrics and gynaecology research, supporting a vibrant community of scholars and practitioners, and contributing to the journal’s legacy of excellence.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Editorial Operations:
- Oversee the entire editorial workflow, from manuscript submission to publication, ensuring timely and efficient processing.
- Coordinate the production of editorial content for each issue at the start of the year (including Editorials, WMLs, Guidelines, and any other special features) and set deadlines for authors; update the production schedule as required.
- Manage the peer-review process, including assigning manuscripts to reviewers and editors, tracking reviewer responses, and resolving conflicts or delays.
- Ensure adherence to ethical guidelines and relevant scholarly publishing standards.
- Perform quality control checks on manuscripts for language, clarity, and formatting, coordinating with authors and editors for revisions as needed.
Strategic Leadership:
- Collaborate with the Editor-in-Chief and editorial board to develop and implement the journal’s editorial policies and strategic objectives.
- Monitor trends in academic publishing to ensure the journal stays current with advancements in obstetrics, gynaecology, and related disciplines.
- Plan and execute initiatives to increase the journal’s impact, readership, and reputation, including special issues, supplements, or themed editions.
- Identify opportunities for knowledge translation, communication about the journal and its content and partnership opportunities to increase reach and readership.
Communication and Coordination:
- Serve as the primary point of contact for authors, reviewers, and editorial board members, ensuring clear and professional communication.
- Coordinate with the journal’s publisher on production schedules, distribution, and marketing efforts.
- Facilitate regular meetings with the editorial board, providing updates on metrics, workflow efficiency, and strategic goals.
Production and Publication:
- Oversee the final copyediting, layout, and proofing processes to ensure the highest standards of accuracy and readability.
- Manage the digital publication schedule, ensuring all deadlines are met.
- Collaborate with the publishing team to maintain the journal’s online presence, including website updates and social media outreach.
Metrics and Reporting:
- Track key performance metrics such as manuscript acceptance rates, time to publication, and citation impact, providing regular reports to the Editor-in-Chief and publisher.
- Analyze submission and readership trends to guide strategic decision-making.
Team and Resource Management:
- Supervise editorial assistants or other staff, providing training and support as needed.
- Manage the editorial office budget
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE and KEY SKILLS
- A degree in science, medicine, health care, or a related field with publication experience OR a background in publishing, journalism, or English with significant experience in scientific or medical publishing.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in academic publishing, with a strong understanding of peer-review workflows and editorial processes.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and meet tight deadlines.
- Bilingualism, English and French, is an asset.
- Exceptional organizational and project management skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to engage effectively with authors, reviewers, and board members.
- Knowledge of publication ethics and legislation, encompassing copyright, misconduct (plagiarism, libel, fraud), and privacy
- Familiarity with the principles and ethics of peer review
- Proficiency with manuscript management systems (e.g., ScholarOne, Editorial Manager) and familiarity with digital publishing tools.
- Analytical skills to interpret performance metrics and implement data-driven improvements.
- Detail-oriented, with a commitment to maintaining high editorial standards.
- Collaborative and proactive, with strong problem-solving capabilities.
- Adaptable to the dynamic nature of academic publishing.

- Ability to work weekends and overtime
- Some travel may be required
