Reference and Indigenous Engagement Assistant

The mission of the University of Winnipeg Library is to support the mission of the University, to create and preserve the University’s archival records, to provide scholarly resources in all formats for the University community, to ensure that these resources are properly organized and accessible, to assist users in accessing and exploring the full potential of these resources, to engage with faculty members in their teaching and research, and to assist students in their learning and research activities.
The **Reference and Indigenous Engagement Assistant is a full-time continuing position** that will provide support to the Instruction and Reference and Indigenous Engagement departments. They will be responsible for the direct provision of reference services as well as monitoring the library’s reference services nodes (in-person and online). The incumbent will participate in the implementation of initiatives related to supporting Indigenous students, provide outreach to the Aboriginal Student Services Centre and other campus and community networks, support the work of the Indigenous Engagement Librarian, and support the indigenization and decolonization efforts of the library in general.
**Responsibilities**:
- Delivers and monitors in-person and virtual reference services.
- Provides assistance at the reference desk and virtually.
- Instructs patrons in the appropriate use of information resources.
- Provides in-depth research assistance.
- Provides assistance with troubleshooting library technology and infrastructure.
- Communicates front line reference service needs to the Head, Library Instruction and Reference.
- Delivers outreach reference services to student service centres.
- Participates in the planning and delivery of orientation for new students.
- Assists in the planning and delivery of the Library’s participation in Open House and other campus and community events.
- Attends ASSC potlucks, discussions, and workshops.
- Participates in ongoing professional development in order to maintain a knowledge of current best practices in library/post-secondary decolonization;
- Engages critically with library resources and systems, notes problems and participates in troubleshooting
- Participates in current and future projects to decolonize library spaces, collections, and services.
- Assists in the creation and maintenance of digital content for the library website, research guides, and frequently asked questions.
- Participates in regular one-on-one meetings with the Head, Instruction and Reference Services and the Indigenous Engagement Librarian.
- May participate in library and campus committees.
- Participates in round-table gatherings of Indigenous staff and faculty on campus.
- Has the right to participate in the professional development and networking events headed by the Office of Indigenous Engagement and Wii Chiiwaakanak.
**Qualifications**:
- High School completion is required
- Diploma from a recognized library technician’s program or an undergraduate degree is required.
- Two years of library experience, preferably in public services and/or community engagement.
- Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and the public.
- Ability to work independently and cooperatively with others and use effective troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Must have good problem solving and organizational skills.
- Knowledge of current trends in library reference, Indigenous pedagogy, and Indigenous information literacy.
- Knowledge of contemporary trends and discussions surrounding the relationships between Indigenous Peoples, cultures, and communities and libraries.
- Knowledge of decolonizing and indigenizing practices in library resource acquisition and description, and in library services and programming.
- Knowledge of First Nations, Métis, Inuit protocols, ways of knowing and being.

**Condition(s) of Employment**:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
**The salary range for this position will be from $40,276.60 to $55,546.40 annually.**
