**Associate Veterinarian, Northern Engagement and Community Outreach**:
The Western College of Veterinary Medicine is the veterinary education institute for Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Canada’s northern territories. Our Northern Engagement and Community Outreach (NECO) program has been actively working towards improved access to veterinary care for communities since 2014, alongside provision Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and Registered Veterinary Technician/Technologist (RVT) student learning opportunities in community-engaged programs. NECO aims to deliver focused action in the areas of social accountability, community-engaged program development and service delivery, interdisciplinary practice and partnerships with Indigenous communities. With the establishment of partnerships with organizations and communities in the WCVM’s partner regions, there is now need for an expanded team to support the achievement of our program’s missions.
**Salary Information**:The salary range is $77,200 to $105,753 (Specialist Professional Phase 2) Salary reflects post-DVM training and experience. This position comes with a comprehensive benefits package which includes pension plan, life insurance (compulsory and voluntary), sick leave, travel insurance, death benefit, dental plan, extended health and vision care plan, employee assistance program and flexible health and wellness spending program. Licensing fees for the provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba will be covered.
**Primary Purpose**: The University of Saskatchewan is seeking an Associate Veterinarian for the Northern Engagement and Community Outreach (NECO) program. As a member of the NECO team, the incumbent will provide veterinary services and oversight support to the program as required. This will include facilitating a 2-week clinical rotation for 4th year DVM students in Manitoba, serving as a pilot project extending the reach of the NECO program. The position requires effective facilitation and management of relationships with multiple stakeholders, including funding agencies, public and private sector groups and research organizations, regulatory agencies, and numerous university units and departments. The incumbent will work closely with the NECO Director and other team members to provide professional and strategic support for the NECO program.
**Nature of Work**: The Associate Veterinarian will report to the NECO Director and will play a key role in supporting the strategic expansion of the NECO program into the WCVM’s partner regions. The role will be primarily clinical in nature, with some clinical instruction in support of DVM student learning involved. The Associate will also be encouraged to leverage community contacts and relationships to support the work of the NECO Director, and will provide clinical oversight of the NECO RVT in support of her work in community.
**Typical Duties or Accountabilities**:
- Actively participate in research, extension and engagement activities of the NECO program.
- Participate in teaching and learning activities of the NECO program, taking the lead for the Manitoba rotation in 2024.
- Support the success of the team, contributing to positive, diverse and inclusive work environments.
- Build and maintain collaborative relationships and partnerships with key internal and external stakeholders.
- Provide clinical support for outreach and engagement activities, at times serving as the sole on-site veterinarian during community outreach clinics.
- Other duties as assigned
**Experience**: Proven experience working in community outreach and engagement as a professional is required. Must have experience working in and promoting a diverse and inclusive environment. A dedication to socially accountable professional practice and demonstration of anti-racist and anti-oppressive approaches is required. Documented completion of recognized educational programs focused on Truth and Reconciliation is an asset. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
**Skills**: Demonstrated strength in community outreach and engagement. Strong problem-solving, personal relationship-building and team-building skills. Demonstrated ability to collaborate and build trust with a wide range of people and the capacity to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders. Outstanding written and oral communication skills and effective organizational skills. Demonstrated enthusiasm for teaching and student and peer mentorship is essential.
