As a regulatory body for Social Workers in British Columbia, the College acts within its statutory authority to develop and administer policies, procedures and practices that reflect the mandate of the College, which is to serve and protect the public by superintending the practice of social work in British Columbia. Founded in 2008, BCCSW is governed by a 12-member Board comprised of 4 public appointed members and 8 elected registrant members, and provides regulatory oversight to over 6670 province wide registered social workers and registered clinical social workers.
**General Overview**:
Reporting to the Registrar/CEO, the Director for Indigenous Initiatives and Engagement (the Director) is based out of the College’s offices located at Vancouver and provides leadership for, and contributes directly to, the development of Indigenous Initiatives to create an inclusive environment, positioning the College as a regulatory leader in Indigenous cultural safety and humility. Occasional travel as an invited guest to Indigenous communities across the province is required.
**Job Responsibilities and Accountabilities**:
Under the leadership of the Registrar and in collaboration with the Indigenous Council, and as per established performance standards:
- Maintain comprehensive knowledge of legislative and regulatory frameworks, including the BC Social Workers Act, freedom of information and privacy legislation, other legislation applicable to social work practice, relevant regulations, policies, and College bylaws and remain updated with changes as they occur within the area of professional regulation
- Provide leadership and direction to the College in its journey to implement the Indigenous Council’s Towards Developing a Respectful Relationship Project Recommendation Schedule
- Provide leadership and direction to the College in its journey to support the implementation of BC Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, An Act respecting First Nations, Inuit, and Metis children, youth and families and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
- Provide leadership and direction to the College in its journey to respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action and National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls: Calls for Justice
- Assist in the development and implementation of action items to support and achieve the College’s strategic priorities.
- Advise in the development and delivery of College functions and responsibilities that support Indigenous registrants
- Collaborate with the Indigenous Council and act as a liaison between the College and the Council
- Identify systemic barriers and strategies to remove systemic barriers at the College faced by members of the public and registrants who self-identify as First Nations, Metis, and/or Inuit
- Conduct research and prepare briefing notes or reports related to the College’s Indigenous Initiatives
- Collaborate with other departments to create compelling education material for the public, community partners, and the Board
- Support and coordinate public education events in collaboration with other departments as needed
- Other related duties as assigned
**BCCSW Indigenous Relations Behavioural Competencies**:
- BCCSW staff are supported to learn and demonstrate the following Indigenous Relations Behavioural Competencies commensurate with their experience and role at the College. _
**1.**Understanding one's thoughts, feelings, values and background through _self-discovery and awareness_ including how one’s thoughts, feelings, values and background impact the success of their interactions and relationships with Indigenous peoples.
2. Increasing one’s ability to build and maintain respectful and effective relationships with Indigenous peoples through _sustained learning and development_ including direct exposure to cultural and community ways and being willing to learn how diverse ways of thinking and acting can ensure the success of the College.
**3.**The ability to work respectfully, knowledgeably, and effectively with Indigenous peoples through _cultural agility_ including creating a sense of safety and by transforming feelings of nervousness or anxiety into curiosity and appreciation.
**4.**Championing the achievement of intended, real change that meets the enduring vision of Indigenous self-determination in British Columbia through _change leadership_ including learning from elders and leaders, routinely energizing the change process, and removing barriers to change.
**Qualifications**:
- BCCSW Registered Social Worker (or eligibility for Registration)
- MSW preferred
- BSW required
- 2-5 years of experience effectively leading a team
