**Position Summary**

This will be the fourth Mental Health and Wellness Lead position at NYCH, working with the newcomer community in providing mental health support services, and providing information and support to other staff on wellness and crisis response. This position will also work with the NYCH’s current Mental Health and Wellness Lead to support staff to increase their knowledge and capacity in areas of mental wellness and crisis response.

**Main responsibilities**:

- Conduct outreach for program participants and connect with other staff for internal referrals
- Carry out initial client assessments, helping clients identify their strengths and assets while exploring their needs and challenges
- Provide one-on-one supportive counselling, and provide information and referrals to refugees struggling with mental health issues
- Support clients to create a plan to effectively deal with mental health challenges
- Assist clients of all ages in negotiating mental health support systems and networks
- Provide initial triage and one-on-one crisis support to those experiencing a range of crisis situations
- Provide follow up support by working with clients to identify additional services and resources, and working with the client to ensure a successful referral
- Offer longer term follow up with clients in crisis situations, to ensure that they are able to successfully navigate the mental health service network
- Develop and facilitate group information sessions for clients on a range of issues with a focus on building on people’s strengths and existing knowledge
- Provide workshops and group discussion that help clients understand trauma, its impact on individuals and families, and strategies to build resilience
- Provide group sessions that give participants a roadmap to understanding mental health issues, and the specialized mental health services that exist and how to access these services
- Participate in committees and coalitions related to refugee issues and mental wellness
- Deliver group sessions to NYCH staff to increase knowledge of mental wellness issues and crisis support
- Share information and resources regarding strengths-based approaches to working with refugees on mental health issues
- Provide consultation and support to individual staff on specific client/case situations
- Document and analyze data on emerging issues in the community and help develop solutions
- Maintain and submit records and evaluative data around participant progress and program outcomesParticipate in team and broader NYCH training and activities as required

**Education**

The minimum level of education is a social work/or equivalent degree; Bachelor of Social Work with experience.

**Qualifications, Experience and Skills**
- Minimum 3 years’ experience working in the community working with newcomers to Canada
- Extensive experience in providing one-on-one support and supportive counselling
- Demonstrated experience developing and facilitating group training sessions
- Knowledge of issues facing newcomers to Canada
- Experience in crisis response and intervention work
- Excellent communication skills in English and Spanish is preferred; other language an asset
- Experience using a variety of software/platforms, knowledge of online tools that enhance services
- Passion for and demonstrated commitment to supporting communities around mental health issues
- Strong leadership and program planning skills
- Ability to provide empathetic, respectful, and effective support around mental health issues, both in person and remotely
- Strong ethical standards and integrity
- Remaining up-to-date on emerging trends, concerns, opportunities, and practices in mental health work that enables NYCH to be responsive to
