**Working for the Agricultural Genomics and Proteomics Unit**

Agricultural Genomics and Proteomics Unit (AGP Unit) in the Faculty of ALES is a core facility with equipment and technologies and assist researchers to facilitate integration of latest genomic technologies in their research and teaching programs.

**Position**

Under the direction of the supervisors, the technician will be responsible for providing support to operation and optimization of equipment in the lab, including Miseq next generation sequencer, flow cytometer and confocal microscope, qPCR instruments, bead beater etc. The position will be responsible for daily maintenance of a clean and safe laboratory environment and assisting lab members with techniques used in the lab and acquisition of the basic lab supplies as assigned by the supervisor. Among other responsibilities, the individual will be a back up person for maintaining the cell culture facilities, which will include handling of biological material, and disposal of biohazardous waste. The technician will provide support conducting molecular experiments, including DNA, RNA isolation, running gel electrophoresis and next generation sequencing. The technician will conduct molecular experiments for the next-generation sequencing, including library construction, QC of library and sequencing. The position requires an individual who is familiar with functional genomics approaches and cattle husbandry. Major responsibilities include conducting experiment for gene expression and next generation sequence, collection of animal samples after animal trials and data analysis.

**Duties**

Lab and equipment maintenance (50%)
- Provide support in operating genomics related lab instruments, including MiSeq sequencer, Flow cytometer, qPCR, confocal microscope, centrifuges, thermocyclers, bead beater, Fastprep system, freezers etc.
- Participate in drafting SOPs and hazard assessments for equipment in the lab
- Provide help in maintaining spill kits and emergency eye wash stations and safely dispose of laboratory waste and old chemicals in accordance with all WHMIS and University safety policies
- Acts as a backup person for maintaining the cell culture facilities, including monitoring the biological safety cabinets, CO2 incubators, ensuring that lab are available in the facility

Perform laboratory work using molecular technologies (50%)
- Isolation of RNA and DNA from different types of samples, including blood, tissue, biopsy, rumen digesta and fluid, feces and swab samples
- Under the direction of the supervisor, perform preparation of PCR, Quantitative PCR and next generation sequencing libraries
- Animal farm work - Under the direction of the supervisor, perform sample collection and processing of biofluids and tissues from cattle, organization of sample storage and transportation
- Provide support in the lab close up
- Disposal of chemicals, samples, cleaning of freezers and fridges

**Qualifications**
- Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree required, Master's Degree preferred with 1-year related experiences
- Knowledge and experience in laboratory safety and best practices
- Experience in a microbiological research lab and knowledge on operating scientific equipment
