Duties/Responsibilities Conducts inspections and investigations in a general program delivery model to identify and control potential health hazards under the provision of the Health Protection and Promotion Act and applicable regulations in the food safety, water quality, rabies, infection prevention and control, and health hazard program. Conducts activities in the Vector-Borne Disease (VBD) Program, including the collection and submission of mosquito samples for laboratory analysis, trap maintenance, tick dragging, and quality initiatives. Investigates standing water complaints and provides education to the public on remediation. Maintains records of activities performed in the program. Responds to potential health hazards and complaints. Collects and submits samples required for specific programs. Updates databases and maintains notes and documentation. Travels daily to visit businesses/establishments to conduct inspections and investigations. Spends approximately 35% of the time in an office environment. Performs related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Current enrollment in a post-secondary public health program meeting the certification requirements of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors. Knowledge of investigation, interviewing, and inspection program delivery. Analytical and problem-solving skills. Knowledge of and ability to comply with polices, procedures, legislation, and regulations. Ability to communicate effectively with members of the public, community and agency partners, peers, and management. Ability to work varying shifts including day, afternoon, and weekend hours. Ability to travel within Waterloo Region. Ability to support and demonstrate the Region’s values. Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities To be considered for employment as a student, a person must be: registered as a full-time secondary or post-secondary student in an accredited institution, or currently recognized as having full-time status by the academic institution but applying for a school vacation, practicum or work term, or returning to full-time studies in the next academic term. Students who are in their final year of academic study and who are not intending to return to full-time studies are eligible for student employment up until the time they convocate. Students participating in education and retraining programs at the post- secondary level, though not full-time students, are eligible for related student employment opportunities, where appropriate.
