POSITION TYPE PERMANENT, FULL-TIME Job Summary The Assistant Director of Finance plays a key role within the finance team, supporting the Director of Finance in managing the organization’s financial operations. This position is responsible for assisting with a wide range of day to day accounting functions, including payroll, accounts receivable/payable, banking, and financial reporting. The role also involves contributing to the planning and development of capital and operating budgets, the preparation of financial statements, and the oversight of financial transactions to ensure compliance with federal and provincial regulations and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). The Assistant Director of Finance provides leadership and coordination within the finance department, supports the implementation of new fiscal policies, and is involved in staff training and supervision. This position ensures the accuracy and confidentiality of financial data and employee records and responds to financial inquiries from internal and external stakeholders. Additionally, the role supports the preparation of reports for the Director of Finance and Co-Executive Directors, and plays and active part in the annual audit process. This role requires a high level of attention to detail, strong organizational and leadership skills, and a thorough understanding of financial regulations and policies. The Assistant Director of Finance is expected to uphold the organization’s HR policies and the provisions of the Collective Agreement, maintaining integrity and confidentiality in all financial and personnel matters. Core Responsibilities Play a hands‑on role in the daily financial operations, including managing payroll, accounts receivable/payable, and banking activities with accuracy and timeliness. Collaborate on the creation and planning of both capital and operating budgets, helping to shape the financial roadmap of the organization. Contribute to the preparation of clear, accurate and insightful financial statements that inform decision‑making. Help oversee and ensure smooth processing of revenues, expenditures, payroll and claims‑maintaining accuracy, compliance, and efficiency in all financial workflows. Stay on top of changing financial regulations and ensure all practices align with federal/provincial standards and GAAP. Support the rollout of new financial policies and procedures, and help train staff to build confidence and consistency across the team. Provide leadership and day‑to‑day support to finance team members, fostering collaboration, accountability, and professional growth. Respond to internal and external financial inquiries with professionalism and clarity. Prepare and deliver timely reports for the Director of Finance and Co‑Executive Directors to support strategic decisions. Play a key role in preparing for the annual audit, ensuring the organization is ready and well‑documented. Uphold organizational HR policies and Collective Agreement provisions while modeling ethical, confidential financial stewardship. Safeguard the confidentiality and integrity of all financial and employee records. Step in with flexibility and a team‑focused mindset to support additional duties as assigned. Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and adherence to NETES policies. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, CPA designation, or equivalent post‑secondary education (specializing in accounting preferred). A 2‑year business degree with an accounting major and progressive experience may be considered. Minimum of 5 years’ experience in financial operations or an accounting‑related role. Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Knowledge of federal and provincial financial regulations. Advance understanding of financial practices in the non‑profit sector. Skilled in financial analysis, budgeting, and preparing financial projections. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, financial systems, and database management. Solid knowledge of business practices and accounting procedures. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in diverse communities. Proven experience in supervising and supporting staff. Knowledge and understanding of the Indigenous community in Winnipeg considered an asset.
