Reporting to the Unit Manager or designate, the Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) provides effective clinical leadership and functional supervision, in addition to front-line Registered Nurse duties as outlined in the Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) Job Description. The AHN is expected to promote quality patient care and team effectiveness through clinical and professional role modeling. The AHN supports a respectful workplace by using effective interpersonal and conflict resolution skills to promote the achievement of organizational goals and adhere to policies and procedures. Fosters team/group effectiveness by modeling (building capacity, teaching, mentoring) excellent practice and interpersonal relationships. Identifies, communicates, and seeks to resolve staff issues. The AHN refers issues of concern to the Manager for guidance or resolution. Keeps team apprised of significant relevant events. This position has been identified and is anticipated to transition to Recovery Alberta effective September 1, 2024. As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.
Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Minimum of 3 years in the last 5 of experience working within an Acute Addiction and Mental Health role. Working knowledge of relevant legislation is required, including the Alberta Mental Health Act and Health Information Act. Demonstrated knowledge of mental health diagnosis, symptomology, and related treatment interventions. Working knowledge of psychotropic medications and psychopathology. Demonstrated experience in a leadership role (e.g. Charge Nurse, Nurse Educator, Professional Practice Lead, etc.). Valid certification in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) training. Demonstrated working knowledge and understanding of the Mental Health system. Demonstrated skills in coaching and mentoring peers.
A demonstrated ability to manage a wide variety of clinical situations with varying levels of acuity and a heterogeneous patient population. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively work within a multi-disciplinary team of health professionals. Ability to be self-directed and exercise independent decision-making skills, problem solving, nursing judgment and critical thinking skills.
