Job Description

Embrace a collaborative leadership role with the Medical Director of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine where your impact goes beyond the lab at Mount Sinai Hospital. As Director of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, you will play a pivotal role in optimizing our laboratory operations and elevating patient care standards. This position challenges you to deploy your leadership and analytical skills to manage a high-volume, dynamic department, ensuring the implementation of the latest diagnostic technologies and methodologies. p>

In this role you will:

  • Oversee the general operations of seven Divisions of Pathology and Lab Medicine (Pathology, Cytopathology, Chemistry, Hematology, Transfusion Medicine, Diagnostic Medical Genetics, Laboratory Information System) in collaboration with the Medical Director to ensure provision of quality services and compliance to regulatory, accreditation and lab licensing requirements.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to senior lab managers on budget preparation, capital equipment planning and procurement, contract negotiations, staff planning, staff management and ensures practices are consistent across all sections of the Department.
  • Develop the Department’s annual operating budget and capital plans, including the monitoring of the monthly operating budget and implementation of strategies to ensure the Department meets a balanced budget.
  • Recruitment of senior lab managers, lab information system officers and senior administrative assistants.
  • Oversee the Department’s Quality Management System to ensure compliance with all relevant federal, provincial, professional standards, regulatory and accreditation requirements.
  • Approve departmental policies and procedures and ensures implementation and compliance.
  • Together with the Medical Director of Pathology and Lab Medicine, develop the departmental strategic plan and set annual goals and objectives to support the plan.
  • Perform annual performance reviews.
  • Chair huddles, weekly Lab Management meetings, and conduct staff forums, communications and learning sessions.

Job Requirements:

Mandatory

  • Successful completion of a Bachelor’s degree in the field of Health Sciences, Health Administration from an accredited educational institution.
  • 7-10 years of recent and relevant experience in progressive leadership positions managing clinical staff in complex environments.
  • Member of the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO).

Preferred

  • Successful completion of a Master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Previous experience in an academic health organization.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Working knowledge in Lab Information Systems (LIS), Microsoft Office and other relevant software.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage time and prioritize tasks to meet tight deadlines and pivot as required while maintaining high-quality standards.
  • Proficient in financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, and cost control.
  • Expertise in developing and updating lab policies.
