Reporting to the Manager Administrative Services and with oversight from the Decanal team, the Science Communications Officer supports the development and maintenance of the Faculty of Science’s annual communication plan. The Science Communications Officer produces and evaluates Science’s strategic communications (print and digital) and social media presence. The Science Communications Officer collaborates with the events/outreach and decanal teams in advertising internal and external Science initiatives.

The Science Communications Officer is required to attend Faculty and University events, held on and off campus, online and in-person, during the workday, and occasionally on nights and weekends. The Science Communications Officer ensures that all materials are produced to the highest standards with consistent messaging, accurate information, quality of presentation and a common visual identity, reflecting the University’s reputation to its internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • Creative and Design Skills: Ability to integrate design principles into communications, with creative writing skills across various media.
  • Knowledge of Communication Tools: Experience with current communication methods, including print, social media, video, and mobile platforms.
  • Adapting to Digital Changes: Understanding the evolving landscape of traditional and digital communications, especially regarding customer engagement and retention.
  • Science Background: Ability to effectively advocate for science education, research funding, and public understanding of science, frame communications to show societal value, tackle misinformation and public misconceptions about science, and understand/highlight the importance of diverse voices in science to ensure that communication efforts promote EDI in science.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to collaborate, build consensus, communicate effectively, and be sensitive to the needs and interests of diverse stakeholders.
  • Client Service and Initiative: Exceptional initiative, reliability, and commitment to providing high-quality client service with all levels of administration/faculty, senior external stakeholders and the diplomatic community.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and work independently.
  • Project Management: Skilled in facilitating projects in fast-paced, dynamic environments.
  • Detail-Oriented and Problem Solving: Resourceful, innovative, flexible, and accessible with a focus on problem-solving and attention to detail.
  • Confidentiality and Judgment: Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound judgment, and demonstrate tact.
  • University Culture: Strong understanding of the university culture and environment.
  • Proficiency: Skilled in working with MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Content Management Systems, social media analytics tools, Google Analytics, web analytics, SEO/SEM, email, social media and/or display advertising campaigns and optimization.

Education and Experience:

  • University honours degree in Journalism, Communications, or Science Communications.
  • A minor focus in the STEM-related fields or coursework is strongly preferred.
  • Five years of progressive related experience in communications and marketing, preferably in an academic setting.
  • Experience in social media promotion, writing, editing, and communications required.
  • Experience with science-related subject matter required.
