POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the President & CEO and as a member of the Leadership Team, the V.P. Nursing provides visionary and progressive leadership and strategic management through the establishment of a collaborative interdisciplinary practice environment, assuring overall excellence in quality practice initiatives and Nursing programs that align with the Mission, Vision and Values of the Home and Philosophy of the Nursing Department.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  1. Developing strategic direction, annual goals and objectives of the Nursing Department by identifying current and emerging resident care needs, work plans, clinical plans, educational plans, and quality and research plans relating to Resident outcomes that support the Mission and Strategic Direction of the Home.
  2. Delegating responsibilities to appropriately qualified staff, according to applicable legislation and standards of the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  3. Promoting and acting as a liaison to demonstrate cooperation and coordination of services/programs with community agencies and other health care providers.
  4. Negotiating all nursing services and supply contracts with vendors.
  5. Leading the development and implementation of resident care standards, policies, and procedures, and working with the nursing team to implement best practice guidelines and specialized clinical services to ensure service excellence.
  6. Ensuring compliance with provincial legislation and protocols pertaining to resident care and responding to inquiries, directives, and clinical matters.
  7. Developing policies and best practices to ensure compliance with Long Term Care legislation and to standardize and streamline new and existing processes and systems.
  8. Accountability for the supply, control, and safe keeping of drugs and narcotics, ensuring standard protocols are followed on all shifts and monitoring competency for safe administration of treatments and documentation standards.
  9. Overall coordination of the Admissions process, serving as liaison with Ontario Health at Home, file review, and related decisions.
  10. Overseeing the work of the RAI/MDS Coordinator, ensuring high-risk indicators are addressed and managed.
  11. Coordinating and overseeing all aspects of Infection Prevention and Control at St. Patrick’s Home.
  12. Coordinating all aspects of Nursing Restorative at St. Patrick’s Home.
  13. Overseeing the work of the BSO team and program.
  14. Accountability for all Clinical Programs under the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021, including directing the work of the associated Committees.
  15. Overseeing, directing, and delegating the work of the Nursing Team at St. Patrick’s Home of Ottawa.
  16. Overseeing the work of the RN Clinical Educator, Admissions Clerk, and Ward Clerks.
  17. Addressing complaints and concerns related to clinical nursing, Nursing programs, and procedures relative to the operation of the Department, ensuring reporting timelines are followed for all reporting requirements.
  18. Serving as primary clinical support, delivering reports and current information via a 24-hour summary, leadership report, and ensuring reporting timelines are followed for all reporting requirements.
  19. Conducting and delegating appropriate clinical program evaluations.
  20. Determining educational needs and, in conjunction with the AVP and HR, coordinating education sessions for the department.
  21. Participating in human resource development through participation in hiring decisions, regular staff performance appraisals for Nursing Program staff, attendance support, and progressive discipline.
  22. Establishing, monitoring, and evaluating staffing patterns, work schedules, and assignments that maximize continuity and consistency of care and staff retention.
  23. Assuming fiscal responsibility for the operation of the Nursing Department, including preparation and submission of an annual budget, monitoring departmental expenditures, identification and explanation of monthly variances, approval/processing of invoices.
  24. All other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION OR EQUIVALENT KNOWLEDGE

  1. Baccalaureate in Nursing Science with additional Leadership education.
  2. Minimum of 5 years nursing experience with 5 years nursing administration experience.
  3. Current Certificate of Competence from the College of Nurses.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Demonstrated leadership ability in working within an interdisciplinary environment.
  2. Knowledge of long-term care facility administration, including accreditation standards, Fixing Long Term Care Act, 2021, and the RAI-MDS process.
  3. Demonstrated ability in managing Human Resources, HR investigation techniques, and financial administration, including experience managing in a unionized environment and budget preparation and administration.
  4. Judgment and initiative in problem resolution of complex and sensitive issues.
  5. Ability to work with minimal supervision, combined with the ability to supervise and manage others.
  6. Team player with the ability to function as a group facilitator and chairperson of committees.
  7. Possessing an understanding of the aging process in terms of psychological, physical, and functional assessments and implications.
  8. Ability to interact with local Universities and Colleges in supporting student placements and practicums.
  9. Computer literacy (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and familiarity with RAI/MDS assessment system and web-based systems pertinent to LTC.
  10. Demonstrated ability to multitask and manage multiple deadlines.
