**Summary**:
This position is responsible for creating and leading a dynamic team of Registered Nurses (RN), Registered Practical Nurses (RPN) and Registered Nurses in the Extended Class. The Director of Nursing provides consultation and advice related to all aspects of nursing practice, education and programming to Clinical Directors and Directors of Patient Care. The incumbent supports the Chief Nursing Executive in planning nursing services and in leading the Nursing Advisory Committee and all other hospital and community initiatives that involve nursing professional practice, education and research.
Reporting to the Vice President of Practice, Quality & Chief Nursing Executive; the Director, Nursing Practice will assist the VP in establishing the vision and direction for the nursing profession at The Royal.
The Director will support nursing at each of The Royal’s sites.
**Duties**:
**Leadership/Administration**
- Supervises the clinical nurse educators
- Leads the implementation and evaluation of nursing programs and services
- Provides guidance and mentorship to CNE and management on matters pertaining to regulatory and professional nursing standards
- Mentors nursing staff to improve and support nursing practice
- Manages budgets and resources as appropriate including budgets associated with provincial nursing initiatives and Health Force Ontario programs
- Is accountable for the delivery of nursing services at The Royal
- Anticipates emergent and future professional trends and key issues and develops action plans in consultation with the CNE
- Works collaboratively with the CNE to ensure nursing services are aligned with the Strategic Plan and sets goals to achieve nursing practice targets in the Plan as well as the Quality Improvement Plan
- Promotes and fosters a safe and healthy work environment
- Builds and fosters collaborative working relationships within the inter-professional health care teams
- Manages the health human resource strategy for nursing recruitment and retention including onboarding and continued professional development
- Ensures there is adequate nursing staff who maintain their skills remain
- Participates in corporate teams, working groups or committees as needed
- Represents The Royal at community committees and partnerships
- Accepts responsibility for policy, practice and procedure development and documentation related to nursing professional practice
**Coordination**
- Coordinates the implementation of programs associated with nursing professional practice and clinical education in collaboration with the clinical programs
- Collaborates with the CNE on initiatives that may improve nursing professional practice
- Fosters strong alliance with academic organizations for placement of nursing students
**Education**
- Promotes professional development and life-long learning of all staff contributing to nursing clinical practice, education, management and research
- Provides direction to the clinical nurse educators regarding program development, implementation and evaluation
- Encourages and supports professional presentations and publications for all staff
- Participates in undergraduate and graduate health education, as well as continuing education, through preceptorship/supervision, consultation and/or joint appointment with academic institutions
**Program Evaluation and Research**
- Evaluates the structure, processes and outcomes of professional programs/initiatives
- Promotes evidenced based nursing practice
- Participates on committees, both internal and external, as they pertain to nursing professional practice and research with the intent to promote and utilize nursing research in practice
**Other**
- Work in a manner that is in compliance with staff and patient/client safety practices, policies and procedures of the Royal.

**Qualifications**_:_**
- Master’s degree in Nursing or equivalent
- Current registration without restriction with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Membership in a professional nursing or other related organization is preferred
