The Associate Vice-President (Indigenous) – Research and Academic working under the Office of the Vice-President (Indigenous) invites applications for a Full-Time Director of Indigenous Research. This position will be based on the Fort Garry Campus. Applications are invited from established researchers who currently hold a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor at the University of Manitoba. The successful candidate will possess strong research skills, demonstrate knowledge in Indigenous history and issues, and expertise in Indigenous knowledge development. Community engagement experience is essential.

The Associate Vice-President (Indigenous) - Research and Academic (AVPI-RA) has responsibility for all matters related to Indigenous curriculum and training, Indigenous graduate students, and developing innovative research relationships with Indigenous communities. The unit currently consists of the AVPI, Executive Assistant, Indigenous Faculty Success Coordinator, Director of Land Based Education and Indigenous Curriculum, and the Director of Indigenous Research and is expected to grow.The Director of Indigenous Research, reporting directly to the AVPI-RA, will provide general oversight and management of the research activities of the AVPI-RA initiatives. In collaboration with existing resources, the Office of the Vice-President (Research and International), the research director of Ongomiizwin, the research director of Mamawipawin, and the academic and research director of the NCTR or Faculty research roles, the Director of Indigenous Research, OVPI, will collaboratively coordinate appropriate programs and services that: Support University of Manitoba Indigenous graduate students and faculty to connect with the resources, tri-council and other grants, and communities necessary for their research.Support or assist with ethics reviews for research projects that incorporate Indigenous methodologies or engage with Indigenous communities.Support, assist, or provide training to the campus community on Indigenous research methods and best practices for engaging in research with Indigenous communities developed in consultation with the AVPI-RA.Serve as a point of contact for Indigenous communities seeking university partners for research needed in their communities.Work with the AVPI-RA, VPRI, and if relevant, Ongomiizwin, Mamawipawin, and NCTR on developing the needed MOU/MOA to partner with Indigenous governments on research.Be a point of contact where relevant when Indigenous communities have concerns about university research taking place in their communities and work with the OVPI-RA on the development of a culturally appropriate emergency response protocol.Provide support to VPRI regarding Indigenous relationships needed for university-wide research initiatives such as CRC recruitment and retention and CFREF proposals.This position will support the U of M in achieving its goals of improving the retention and overall success rates of Indigenous graduate students and the recruitment and retention of Indigenous faculty. Additionally, in collaboration with the VPRI, Ongomiizwin Research, and the NCTR Research, the Director of Indigenous Research will assist the AVPI-RA in the design and implementation of a community relations and engagement strategy for innovative research by, with, and for Indigenous communities envisioned through the Indigenous Senior Leadership consultation process.The Director will achieve success by developing and/or employing a variety of programs and services that will meet or exceed the needs of campus-affiliated Indigenous researchers and researchers whose work is by, with, and for Indigenous communities, as well as ensure that Indigenous communities have avenues to build strong, safe, respectful, and mutually supportive research relationships with campus scholars. The Director of Indigenous Research will also be attentive to barriers to research success identified by Indigenous faculty and graduate students as well as all researchers engaged in research by, with, and for Indigenous communities, and will inform the AVPI-RA of policies, procedures, and practices in need of assessment and/or revision.The position will enhance support for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit graduate students and faculty in their dreams and pursuits to access research funding, obtain ethics approvals, and complete the research necessary for them to graduate or to publish and network nationally and internationally, so as to achieve tenure and promotion. The position will promote safe, respectful, and meaningful research relationships by, with, and for Indigenous communities.Position Duties: 40% Research, Evaluation, Reporting, 40% Program Management, 10% Indigenous Government Engagement, 5% awards distribution, 5% Other duties.Supervises the development, implementation, and regularly updates the strategic Indigenous research plan with the OVPI, the AVP-RA, Ongomiizwin Research, Mamawipawin, and the NCTR and ensures that it is aligned with other relevant and appropriate strategies/policies in OVPRI, TCPS2, and OCAP.Supports the building and maintenance of strong, respectful, meaningful, and reciprocal relationships needed for research with First Nations, Metis, and Inuit communities, governments, and potential Indigenous graduate students.Builds collaborative research partnerships with other post-secondary institutions (in particular, the signatories to the Blueprint for Indigenous Education) for the purposes of planning and delivering ethical Indigenous research practices in line with TCPS2 and OCAP and bringing together skilled research teams to meet the needs of Indigenous communities, governments, and corporate partners.Works in partnership with relevant stakeholders such as the NCTR, Ongomiizwin, and Mamawipawin, academic faculties and schools as well as non-academic units to develop and implement Indigenous research programs and strategies, and the skills-based training required to conduct them.Supports, in consultation with the VPRI, and the AVPI-RA, in the work of addressing policies and/or practices that are not culturally supportive or respectful or that hinder the access or progress of research by and for Indigenous communities at the University of Manitoba.Provides training to the UM campus community on Indigenous research methods and ethical practices for community-engaged research, developed in consultation with the AVPI-RA.Provides support to the VPRI ethics office regarding research protocols for projects with Indigenous communities, and/or using Indigenous research methodologies.Responsible for the management of all funds administered through the Office of Indigenous Research; p>The ideal Candidate will be Indigenous (First Nation, Métis or Inuit) with demonstrated research and publication experience and knowledge working with diverse Indigenous cultures, communities, protocols, and practices with a graduate degree.Experience, knowledge, and competency with respect to Indigenous cultures, history, and community protocols required.Experience, knowledge, and competency with respect to Indigenous research methodologies, TCPS2, and OCAP is required.Diverse experience in Indigenous research in a post-secondary setting is required.Experience fostering reconciliation initiatives with diverse peoples is preferred.Experience working with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities, organizations, and governments is required.Extensive knowledge of Indigenous political platforms as they relate to education, research, and community visits required.Demonstrates a commitment to graduate student research success.Demonstrates a commitment to Indigenous faculty and graduate student success particularly regarding programs of research and funding.Demonstrates a commitment to safe and respectful research by, with, and for Indigenous communities and governments.Knowledge and understanding of university governance, administration, and policies.Experience supervising personnel and as a research project Principal Investigator is required.Experience in public speaking, advocacy, report writing, and grant writing are required.Knowledge of University of Manitoba graduate degree programs, research centers, and research protocols is preferred.Previous experience in research administration and research with Indigenous communities/governments preferred.Doctoral or terminal degree in your field Three years in an administrative position
