Summary:

Barr is seeking a senior-level water and wastewater engineer. This person will undertake challenging and progressive work focused on water and wastewater supply and distribution systems, collection, reuse, and treatment facilities for both mining and industrial clients. This candidate may also have a role in day-to-day client service and business development.

Project responsibilities may include:

  1. Working as an individual or leading project teams to assist our clients with evaluation, planning, and implementation of water, wastewater, and reuse system operations to address current and future goals including:
    1. Treatment technology evaluations that may include data analysis, mass balance calculations, modeling, bench testing, and pilot testing.
    2. Existing system operation, troubleshooting, and process improvement evaluations.
    3. Long-range planning assistance, including evaluation of current operating systems and forecasting of future capital and operating expenses.
    4. Development of conceptual and detailed engineering including plans and specifications for construction.
    5. Assistance with construction, start-up, troubleshooting, and operation of new systems.
    6. Preparation of technical reports.

Typical business-development activities will include:

  1. Building and maintaining client relationships.
  2. Tracking marketing leads and project opportunities.
  3. Developing proposals and presentations.
  4. Networking and participating in industry associations.
  5. Sharing Barr’s capabilities with existing and potential clients.

Additionally, the selected candidate may be leading client and regulatory negotiations and mentoring junior staff. This job may require occasional out-of-town travel.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering, or related field.
  2. Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) licensure in Alberta and/or British Columbia with the ability to become licensed in other provinces as needed.
  3. 10 or more years of relevant work experience.
  4. Strong technical skills related to water and wastewater engineering.
  5. Experience with preparation of, and managing preparation of, engineering plans and specifications, equipment selection, and cost estimating.
  6. Exposure to treatment plant operations.
  7. Strong technical and problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  8. Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with project team members, regulators, and clients.
  9. Demonstrated effectiveness in building working relationships and leading and working with multidisciplinary teams.
  10. Demonstrated project management skills.
  11. Willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedules to meet project needs.
  12. Legal authorization to work in Canada without the need for sponsorship from Barr Ltd., now or in the future.
  13. Possession of a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Advanced degree in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering.
  2. Engineering knowledge and experience with industrial processes such as mining, manufacturing, petroleum refining.
  3. Engineering knowledge and experience with landfill leachate.
  4. Sound understanding of applied aquatic chemistry and environmental microbiology.
  5. Experience at all stages of design, from concept through final including commissioning stage.
  6. Experience with Oil Sands Process Water (OSPW) treatment technologies and receiving environment limitations.

A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of either of Barr's Calgary, Alberta or Saskatoon, Saskatchewan offices.

NOTE: Some work locations may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may also require entering and working in facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients.
