Highly Skilled Water and Wastewater Engineering Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled Water and Wastewater Engineering Specialist to join our team at Barr Engineering Co. in Calgary, Alberta or Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. This is a senior-level position that requires extensive experience in water and wastewater supply and distribution systems, collection, reuse, and treatment facilities for mining and industrial clients.
Main Responsibilities:
- Lead project teams to assist clients with evaluation, planning, and implementation of water, wastewater, and reuse system operations to address current and future goals.
- Conduct treatment technology evaluations, including data analysis, mass balance calculations, modeling, bench testing, and pilot testing.
- Evaluate existing system operation, troubleshooting, and process improvement opportunities.
- Develop long-range plans, forecasting capital and operating expenses.
- Create conceptual and detailed engineering designs, including plans and specifications for construction.
- Assist with construction, start-up, troubleshooting, and operation of new systems.
- Prepare technical reports.
Business Development Activities:
- Build and maintain client relationships.
- Track marketing leads and project opportunities.
- Develop proposals and presentations.
- Network and participate in industry associations.
- Share company capabilities with existing and potential clients.
This role may require occasional out-of-town travel and leadership of client and regulatory negotiations, as well as mentoring junior staff. A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering, or related field.
- Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) licensure in Alberta and/or British Columbia with the ability to become licensed in other provinces as needed.
- 10+ years of relevant work experience.
- Strong technical skills related to water and wastewater engineering.
- Experience with preparation of engineering plans and specifications, equipment selection, and cost estimating.
- Exposure to treatment plant operations.
- Strong technical and problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated effectiveness in building working relationships and leading multidisciplinary teams.
- Demonstrated project management skills.
- Willingness to travel and adjust personal schedules to meet project needs.
- Legal authorization to work in Canada without sponsorship requirements.
- Possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering.
- Engineering knowledge and experience with industrial processes such as mining, manufacturing, petroleum refining.
- Engineering knowledge and experience with landfill leachate.
- Sound understanding of applied aquatic chemistry and environmental microbiology.
- Experience at all stages of design, from concept through final including commissioning stage.
- Experience with Oil Sands Process Water (OSPW) treatment technologies and receiving environment limitations.
The estimated salary range for this position is $140,000 - $180,000 per year, based on the location and industry standards.
