The SBDC Business Counselor III is responsible for providing counseling and delivering programs that accomplish the purposes of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) cooperative agreement with the University of the Virgin Islands to provide high-quality business and economic development assistance to small businesses and nascent entrepreneurs (pre-venture) in order to promote their growth, expansion, and innovation to increase productivity and to improve management.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree with three years of relevant experience in the following: Entrepreneurship, business ownership, or business management.
  • Or 5 years of experience of business ownership or management.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong communication (verbal and written) skills
  • Presentation and public speaking skills
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Organizational skills
  • Proficiency in modern office practices, procedures, and computer equipment and software.
  • Familiarity with USVI government agencies (DLCA, Lt. Governor's Office, IRB).

  • Represent VI SBDC in the community
Physical Demands
  • The scope of the job requires evening and occasional weekend work.
  • Occasional overnight, out-of-town travel is required.

Advertised Job DutiesConsulting:
  • Provides individual consulting to entrepreneurs, business owners, and business managers.
  • Analyzes situations, makes recommendations, and educates clients with regard to the internal and external factors that influence the business conceptualization, customer relations, operations, and organization areas of a business' operating situation.
  • Directs clients to other appropriate sources of business information and assistance.
  • Maintains an appropriate level and mix of clients as noted by annual deliverables and strategic plan objectives.
  • Prepares for meeting with clients, completes all applicable CRM updates, and follows-up for clients next sessions; (these duties include—research, business plan review/creation, financial review/creation, emails, other administrative tasks related to client consulting).
Training:
  • Develops and delivers high quality business training programs that are responsive to the needs of the business community served.
  • Generates curricula for business programs, seminars, conferences, etc. for the local business interests.
  • Determines topics, agendas, instructional materials, and other resources required.
  • Creates and produces instructional materials.
  • Serves as an instructor of business training programs.
  • Serves as an advocate of business development, expansion and retention in the area, thereby becoming a visible leader in the local business community.
  • Works collaboratively with private-sector businesses, other economic development assistance units of the University of the Virgin Islands, and other units of the Territory Government to further the economic well-being of the U.S. Virgin Island's citizens.
Professional Development:
  • Maintains professional competence and expands the knowledge base and ability of the VI SBDC to serve the business and industry community through participation in continuous profession development activities.
  • Establishes an annual professional development plan in alignment with the VI SBDC's guidelines.
Other Duties:
  • Contributes to the overall success of the VI SBDC by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
