Rutgers University seeks a skilled and compassionate Program Coordinator I (Counselor) to support the academic and career goals of 6th – 12th grade New Brunswick Public School (NBPS) students through the NJ GEAR UP Program.

This exciting opportunity offers a chance to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people, guiding them towards higher education and equipping them with essential tools for success.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Serving as the primary counselor for the GEAR UP program.
  • Developing and implementing recruitment strategies and program activities.
  • Providing individualized academic and personal counseling, assisting students with college applications and scholarships, mentoring, college tours, and financial aid information workshops.
  • Coordinating the activities of mentors and tutors to ensure effective program delivery.
  • Maintaining accurate records of counseling services provided to participants using the GEAR UP data management system.

To thrive in this role, you should have:

  • A Bachelor's degree or relevant combination of education and experience.
  • At least two (2) years of experience in a related field.
  • A valid driver's license, with a reliable personal vehicle for business travel.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • High level of professionalism and discretion when handling confidential information.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of diverse student populations.

Bilingualism in English and Spanish is an asset, as is experience working in an urban K-12 educational setting.

This role requires regular travel to partner schools in New Brunswick, flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends, and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.

Please note that this position is contingent upon continued funding beyond the current grant cycle.
