The Acute Care Program is currently seeking a full-time, temporary (18 months) Nurse Practitioner to work in Concurrent Outpatient Medical and Psychosocial Addiction Support Service (COMPASS). Concurrent Outpatient Medical & Psychosocial Addiction Support Services (COMPASS) is an outpatient service specializing in evidence-based, medical and psychosocial interventions for clients with addiction/concurrent disorder concerns. Reporting to the manager of COMPASS, the Nurse Practitioner will work in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team to provide addiction and concurrent disorder treatment to COMPASS clients. Specifically, the NP will support the team in the assessment and treatment of existing COMPASS clients in the clinic and in the COMPASS Day Detox, initiating medication and providing medication bridging, and supporting transitions in care for clients as well as consult/liaison capacity for our referring partners and other internal services. You will demonstrate autonomy while assuming accountability and authority to communicate a diagnosis, prescribe drugs and order a range of diagnostic tests. The accountabilities will include monitoring clients in partnership with an Addiction Medicine Physician, addressing acute medical issues, as well as engaging in patient education. The Nurse Practitioner may also be involved in supporting both in-person and virtual assessments and treatment. You will participate as a member of the interprofessional clinical team and contribute to and collaborate within the program area. The incumbent will demonstrate a health equity, diversity and inclusion lens, and practice from a harm reduction, recovery-oriented, and trauma-informed approach to care. The incumbent will also participate in and support: continuous quality improvement initiatives; the research and educational activities of the service; program development; service provider relationship-building; and capacity-building activities. You will practice in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario practice standards, the Canadian Nurses’ Association Advanced Practice Nursing Framework, and with all applicable legislation requirements. You will support a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork and complies with all applicable regulatory and legislative requirements. Some evening hours may be required. Other related duties may be assigned as required. This position is located at 100 Stokes Street.
The incumbent must be Registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class [RN(EC)] and with a specialty certificate in either Adult or Primary Health Care and possess a current BCLS. They must provide evidence that you have completed the CNO education to prescribe controlled substances and are therefore entitled to practice without restrictions. The NP must be able to demonstrate competencies related to safe, effective and ethical prescribing, and managing clients who are treated with controlled substances. Preference will be given to candidates who possess, or are currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Nursing or related graduate degree. CNA certification as a Certified Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse is an asset. You must have 2 years or demonstrated expertise in working with clients with mental health, substance use and complex or chronic pain issues. The ability to work independently and as a member of an interprofessional team, and a demonstrated ability to effectively and professionally carry out the responsibilities of the role is required, including demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective therapeutic relationships with complex clients. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; demonstrated knowledge of mental health and addictions issues; and extensive knowledge of the clinical standards related to the scope of practice of Nurse Practitioners is required. The ability to work with clients from diverse ethno-racial and cultural backgrounds is required as is the ability to work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure excellence in client care, education and research. Effective organization, decision-making, and problem solving skills are required in this fast-paced environment. Computer skills, including word processing, electronic communication and workload measures are essential. Ability to work flexible hours is a requirement. Bilingualism (French/English) or proficiency in a second language is considered an asset.
