About The Opportunity

The Manager, Lands & Natural Resources is responsible for developing and overseeing special projects that are ʔaq̓am lands and natural resources-based, according to natural law and qanikitȼi (ʔaq̓am values and principles) for the use and benefit of all ʔaq̓amnik̓ (ʔaq̓am people present and future generations). In addition to the projects they oversee, the Manager, Lands & Natural Resources provides specialized technical support to ʔaq̓am community’s growth. This position supports and collaborates with other staff within the Lands and Natural Resources Department, including the Director of Lands and Natural Resources (DLNR), Forester, and Land Code Advisor, and directly supervises the Project Coordinator - playing a role in the development and implementation of the ʔaq̓am Strategic Plan.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Work with the DLNR to scope and develop projects related to lands and natural resources, guided by the Community Strategic Plan and Land Use Plan including; Terrestrial Ecosystem Restoration (prescribed burning, forest, grassland, wetland), Potable Water, Archaeology, Forestry, Environmental Site Assessments & Remediation, and Climate Adaptation.
  2. Proactively seek funding through grant writing, liaise with funders and meet reporting requirements.
  3. Navigate internal, provincial, and federal land use processes and secure appropriate approvals to conduct project activities, including but not limited to: Band Council Resolutions, permits under ʔaq̓am Amended Land Code, species-at-risk permits, cultural heritage protections.
  4. Provide timely communications related to on-reserve land- based projects to ʔaq̓amnik̓.
  5. Respond to inquiries from ʔaq̓amnik̓ related to land and natural resource use.

More About You

The successful candidate will hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Resource Management (forestry, ecology, natural resources, land use planning) and will have at least 5 years’ experience in a similar role, monitoring strategic and/or land use plans and managing land and natural resource projects. Project management experience, grant writing and contract administration are required. A demonstrated knowledge of Ktunaxa/Aboriginal people and Ktunaxa/Aboriginal culture would be an asset. We are seeking a strategic, analytical thinker with a Community focused approach who will take the initiative to prioritize multiple projects with a high degree of ethics, confidentiality and integrity. You must have a clear Criminal Record and provide proof of such as well as provision of a clean driver’s abstract and a Valid Class 5 license.

Salary will commensurate with experience from a range ($78,000 to $111,000 per year) and includes a favorable benefits package and pension plan.
