We’re building the future of creative intelligence and are looking for talented people to help us get there 🚀 About the DevOps Engineer Role We’re hiring a DevOps Engineer to take ownership of the systems that keep Motion running reliably and help our engineering team ship quickly and safely. This is a function we expect to grow as we scale, so as our first hire in this area, it’s a chance to set the direction, define the standards, and build the foundation that future team members will work from. What You’ll Be Doing Reliability and SRE (35%) Own SLOs, meaningful alerting, incident response, and runbooks Own and improve our current monitoring systems in Datadog, including baseline observability and proactive infra monitoring Handle infrastructure issues and performance investigations Platform and Developer Experience (25%) Improve GitHub Actions CI speed and stability, build PR preview environments, and create golden paths for developers Stand up a safe developer database strategy Ops and Infrastructure as Code (25%) Own Pulumi IaC and Docker images, environment management, secrets, and access control Maintain edge hygiene and payload sanity Security (10%) Implement SSO/MFA, maintain security and access hygiene, and handle first‑pass code security and up‑to‑date‑ness Monitor supply chain security and gather SOC 2 evidence FinOps (5%) Identify and execute quick wins for cost, storage, and compute optimization Your Roadmap First 30 days: Baseline and stabilize Review: Pulumi inventory check and drift report Build: Rebuild a minimal pathway for Preview Deploys Stabilize: Consolidate Datadog monitors, silence the noise, and build "Golden Signal" dashboards Ops: Inventory Docker images and fix caching layers FinOps: Establish a baseline for NAT/storage costs and propose a consolidation plan (e.g., Private‑Link opportunities) Beyond: Build and optimize Serious FinOps: Aggressive cost reduction and control within Azure Internal Tooling: Build the "control plane" for how engineers interact with infrastructure (CLI tools, deployment dashboards) Maturity: Implementation of multi‑tenant support, rigorous load testing, and capacity planning Documentation: Create infra diagrams and train the team on the "how" and "why" Our Ideal Fit Brings Deep production experience with Azure and Cloudflare (or similar edge platforms) Strong infrastructure‑as‑code expertise with Pulumi (TypeScript or Python) or Terraform, with a policy‑as‑code mindset and readiness to adapt Mastery of GitHub Actions at scale, specifically within monorepos (Turborepo/pnpm), including OIDC‑based CI authentication and cache management Experience designing instrumentation and observability systems (APM, tracing, profiling) in Datadog, New Relic, or Honeycomb, alerting on symptoms rather than noise Debug complex production issues spanning the full stack, from the network layer up (memory leaks, frame‑time inconsistencies, performance bottlenecks) High agency and pragmatic approach: identify problems and fix them without waiting for tickets, and understand that complex systems are hard to measure but you try anyway Comfort with ambiguity and building in a fast‑paced startup environment What You’ll Love About Motion Competitive compensation package: equity for all employees, health benefits from day one, a monthly health & lifestyle stipend, 20 days of PTO, and a $1,500 work‑from‑home stipend Remote‑first flexibility: work from anywhere with team members spanning Canada, the U.S., and beyond Team connection: annual company‑wide offsite (this year, a week by the lake in Muskoka, Canada) Proven leadership: founding team has built a successful company in this space Opportunity for impact: as an early team member, your contributions shape product, team, and the future of the company High‑performance, low‑ego culture: ambitious, action‑oriented team that values collaboration and continuous learning A Note on Location We’re looking to hire someone based in Canada or the United States, but are open to exceptional candidates in other locations.
