The Opportunity:

The Alberta Geological Survey (AGS), a branch of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), is currently recruiting for a Senior Geophysicist, Seismic Interpretation to join a talented and multi-disciplinary group of geoscientists and engineers within the Subsurface Geology and Geohazards team. As a Senior Geophysicist, Seismic Interpretation, you are expected to provide technical support and mentorship to staff across the organization and will be responsible for providing technical review with constructive feedback to other technical experts.

This role requires expertise on the integration of reflection and passive seismic data with other geospatial datasets, in defining, classifying and understanding the geometry, architecture and structural nature of Alberta's subsurface to solve complex and often undefined problems. It requires open collaboration, teamwork, and a drive for continuous improvement in all we do.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Accountable for delivering results through publication of technical reports, maps, digital information, and peer-reviewed literature. Prepare findings for internal and external audiences including non-AER stakeholders, as well as teams, branches, and divisions within AER.

  • Actively manage data acquired or produced during AGS project work. Work to ensure data and information is stored and described according to best-practice standards for re-use and is handled and protected after project is complete.

  • Provide subsurface geological support and expertise to other branches in the AER through participation in AER projects or upon request, including frequent collaboration and support of the Induced Seismicity experts in the organization.

What we're looking for in you:

  • Masters Degree in geoscience or other related education is preferred and eligibility for registration as a Professional Geoscientist with APEGA is required.

  • 7+ years of relevant industry, academia or government geoscience experience.

  • Experience coding in Matlab, Python, or similar languages.

  • Experience using Petrel is preferred.

  • Demonstrate a strong working knowledge of geophysics and its application through a history of conference presentations and/or peer-reviewed publications.

  • Demonstrates working knowledge of 2D and 3D reflection seismic interpretation, use of attributes for subsurface characterization, as well as integration with other geophysical data sets (airborne surveys, shallow subsurface geophysical methods, well logs, earthquakes).

  • Strong written and oral communication skills to communicate complex geoscience concepts, practices, or approaches to stakeholders.

Additional Information:

  • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.

  • Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result, the position may be redesigned and/or reclassified.

  • If you need accommodation during any stage of the recruitment process, please email PeopleServices@aer.ca. Information relating to the need for accommodation and accommodation measures will be addressed confidentially.

What we offer you:
