The Opportunity
The position of Urban Designer is the senior-level position within professional planning industry. It is distinguished from the Planning Designer position because it involves more professional-level duties and judgment. This position may also require negotiation and decision making in the best interest of Clients. This position level receives immediate direction and supervision from planners, project planners, and the planning manager. This position provides mentorship and direction to the planning designers and planning technicians and works alongside the planning analysts. Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform advanced subdivision and conceptual layout designs.
  • Perform advanced illustrative design and master planning exercises.
  • Review or assist in the review of moderately difficult development proposals and site plans for conformance with codes, plans, and regulations.
  • Evaluate or assist in the evaluation of rezoning /subdivision applications, site plans, special use permits, variances and other proposals.
  • Communicate with and manage outcomes from subconsultants and outside agencies.
  • Develop, maintain, and adjust project schedules (small to medium) .
  • Advise Client and outside agencies on delays.
  • Overall design review and analysis confirmation.
  • Review and approve cost estimates.
  • Provide high level design advice to Client.
  • Advise Clients / Municipal staff on critical technical matters.
  • Chair meetings with Clients / Municipal staff. • Negotiate, provide advice, or determine outcomes on behalf of Clients.
  • Negotiate with approving agencies in relaxation of design requirements or acceptance of alternate design options.
  • Site visits, as needed.
  • Complete review, evaluation and finalize of basic technical writing.
  • Attend evening and/or weekend meetings for Committee/Council meetings, Open houses, public meetings, and Client meetings, as needed.
  • Manage internal planning teams (1 - 3 staff).
  • Mentorship to junior staff.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in urban planning, architecture, public policy, or related area of study in addition to 2 - 7 years of planning experience. Other positions at this level require a master's degree but, in these cases, no formal experience is usually required
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of planning.
  • Strong AutoCAD skills with supplemental illustrative skills (Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign).
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of research and data collection.
  • Knowledge of effective writing techniques.
  • Statistical, algebraic, or geometric knowledge and the ability to apply such knowledge in practical situations.
  • Knowledge and experience with the land development process including site planning, neighbourhood plans and other high-level plans and graphics.
  • Oral communication and interpersonal skills to explain rules and procedures internally and potential to the public.
  • Creative problem-solving skills to gather relevant information to solve vaguely defined practical problems.
  • Able to review plans and to determine compliance with such regulations and to apply regulations to field conditions.
  • Able to create graphic designs, development strategies, and render site plans via sketches and/or computer graphics highly desirable.
  • Able to work on several projects or issues simultaneously.
  • Able to work independently or in a team environment as needed.
  • Able to attend to details while keeping big-picture goals in mind

Compensation
The salary range for this position is $65,000 to $83,000 per year, commensurate with experience, skillsets, and qualifications. Benefits & Rewards
