Position Summary

Reporting to the Administrative Manager, the Co-ordinator: Hallman Chair Research Initiatives is accountable for the day-to-day management of project activities, including budgeting, strategic planning, research grant writing, and providing functional guidance to a team of Research Assistants. The Co-ordinator: Hallman Chair Research Initiatives contributes to the projects’ program of activities by designing and implementing research and development initiatives in collaboration with the Chair and other independent research teams, community and academic partners, and working professionals. The Co-ordinator partners with the Chair to prepare research instruments, grant applications, implement and coordinate field research, analyze data, and write research reports, summary bulletins, and ancillary academic publications for internal and external partners or audiences.

Accountabilities Research Coordination
  • Oversee the progress of research activities, in pursuit of meeting medium and long-term goals, by maintaining research and administrative processes, coordinating data collection efforts, anticipating and problem-solving difficulties to ensure the integrity and completeness of data
  • Direct a team of research assistants - monitor student research assistants’ progress in completing assigned tasks by tracking hours and deliverables
  • Contribute to the conceptual development of research directions and plan proposed research activities
  • Identify research priorities and develop short, medium, and long-term goals and work plans
  • Anticipate and mobilize resources needed to support the goals of the Hallman Research Chair, such as identifying and seeking external research funding
  • Facilitate the preparation and submission of external research funding applications (e.g., SSHRC, provincial Ministry competitions, international funding opportunities)
  • Develop and implement protocols and best practices for all phases of a research study such as participant recruitment, data collection, data analyses, report writing, and dissemination
  • Design, test, and implement test data collection instruments such as interview guides, questionnaires, and technology-driven methods
  • Prepare university REB applications, funder annual progress reports, and other necessary documentation to facilitate research activities
  • Consult with the Research Office for ethics review and external funding proposals
Data Analysis & Writing
  • Conduct all aspects of data analyses for multiple research projects.
  • Create and maintain databases to track research activities, including participant recruitment, data collection, and data analyses
  • Participate in the design, collection, analysis, and reporting of qualitative and quantitative research data
  • Gather data through surveys, interviews, or document reviews
  • Analyze data using SPSS or NVIVO software programs
  • Collaborate in the writing of research reports and other publications and creative research outputs (videos, presentations, etc.)
  • Contribute to the writing of research proposals to secure external funding and complete internal ethical review proposals.
  • Write research reports for academic and non-academic audiences, including verifying references, editing, and formatting the report
  • Synthesize research findings into dissemination products such as final research reports, journal articles, and other accessible products
Budgeting
  • Accountable for the long-term financial planning for project activities
  • Create operating budgets for various projects
  • Manage finances across multiple research projects by reconciling projected budgets against actual expenses (e.g., accessing financial information in Laurier’s Millennium and Banner online systems)
  • Track and report monthly on budget versus actual expenses to the Chair
  • Consult with Central & Research Finance, Procurement, and the Administrative Manager for overall budgetary issues and purchases
Community Partnership & Engagement
  • Facilitate productive and supportive relationships with research partners, including Family and Children’s Services, neighbourhood/consumer groups, research participants, professional associations, publishers, and academic/service providers locally and internationally
  • Communicate with others in both written and oral formats, including research work plans (with students), implementation activities (with external community organizations), MOUs, research charters, webinars, daily correspondence, final research reports, academic journal articles, conference presentations
Reporting Relationships

This Position Reports to: Administrative Manager with functional direction from the Hallman Research Chair

Provides functional guidance to a team of 1-5 research assistants

Qualifications
  • 2-3 years of experience managing university or community-based research projects including goal-setting, work planning, resource allocation, and budgeting
  • Applied knowledge of research methodologies and ethics in the social sciences
  • Demonstrated experience in writing targeted products (e.g. funding applications, peer-reviewed journal articles, final research reports, research ethics applications)
  • Strong analytical abilities to develop innovative solutions to problems
  • Organizational skills to develop and maintain research protocols and processes
  • Ability to manage multiple competing work priorities and deadlines
  • Proficiency in word processing software (e.g. Microsoft Office 365), spreadsheets (e.g. Excel, Googlesheets), video conferencing (e.g. Zoom), specialized data analyses software (e.g. NVivo, dedoose, SPSS)
  • Experience with various social media platforms
  • Some knowledge of child welfare or children’s mental health is considered an asset
Hours of Work

This is a part-time, continuing position. Regular hours of work are 24 hours per week between Monday and Friday. Flexibility in hours may be required due to periods of high volume. When possible, the manager will adjust hours so that no more than 24 hours are worked per week.

Compensation 

Job Level: E

Rate of Pay: $39.89 - $42.17 per hour with an annual step progression on anniversary date to $45.59.

Considerations for new hire step placements include, qualifications and length/depth of required experience, relevant market rates for similar jobs, internal equity, and estimated learning curve in starting the job.
