Starting: September 2023 (12-month, part-time, term position)

Compensation: $21-$23 per hour, depending on experience (15 hours per week with flexibility)

The Saskatchewan Environmental Society (SES) is a non-profit, registered charity that has been active in Saskatchewan since 1970. SES’s current action areas include sustainable energy and climate solutions, water protection, resource conservation, biodiversity preservation, and reduction of toxic substances.

SES is seeking an outgoing individual to coordinate community engagement and the implementation of a green infrastructure project in a Saskatoon neighbourhood with high social and environmental need. This will involvetransforming a large area of land (≥ to 250m2) into a co-created, climate-resilient, nature-rich space (such as a mini forest, pollinator garden, rain garden, vegetable garden, etc.). By increasing green infrastructure, we can improve local resilience to climate change and make our communities more vibrant and healthy places to live.


Primary activities include:

· Develop and implement community outreach plans to engage community organizations and residents in the green infrastructure (GI) project.

· Organize and facilitate participatory planning sessions for determining the GI project’s site location and design.

· Secure a site host and produce a host agreement for the GI project.

· Develop landscape, health & safety, and maintenance plans for the GI project.

· Manage the implementation of the GI project in summer of 2024, including organizing volunteers.

Skills and expertise needed:

a strong background in the role green infrastructure can play in climate mitigation, including knowledge of the City of Saskatoon’s Green Infrastructure Strategy,

an understanding of the opportunities and challenges involved in designing and implementing green infrastructure projects,

familiarity with local flora and gardening practices,

an outgoing disposition and be comfortable in approaching institutions, businesses, organizations, municipalities, and individuals through an anti-oppressive and equitable lens,

a proven ability to relate to and connect with a diversity of people with intersecting identities, both in-person and virtually,

an understanding of Indigenous peoples’ unique histories, cultures, values, and protocols,

an understanding of colonialism, decolonization, and settler/Indigenous relationships,

group meeting and facilitation skills,

experience in public speaking and in responding to media requests,

the ability to juggle many tasks simultaneously and complete them in a timely manner,

a demonstrated ability to direct and manage successful campaigns and projects,

experience organizing and coordinating large numbers of volunteers,

excellent interpersonal communications skills and writing skills, and

the ability to work in-person from the SES office with proof of COVID-19 vaccinations.

A background in urban or land-use planning, horticulture, urban agriculture, landscaping, or a similar area is an asset.

Community development experience is an asset.

Prior relationships with equity-deserving groups and the organizations that represent them in Saskatoon is an asset.

Experience with interpreting GIS data, granular maps, and other visual evidence-based tools is an asset.

Occasional weekend or evening work may be required.
