This role is a critical part of Conestoga College’s partnership with EQAO (Education Quality and Accountability Office) to administer the provincial Math Proficiency Test (MPT) for teacher candidates. Students from across the province who have earned their teaching credential must complete this test before being eligible to work in the field.

The main function of the Accommodation Coordinator (Math Proficiency Testing) is to administer the process for disability-related accommodations. The incumbent fields general inquiries about the process and ensures students provide appropriate documentation. In addition, the incumbent must review, validate and interpret medical documentation and accommodation letters as needed. The incumbent is responsible for coordinating the logistics associated with communicating with students, test centres, and invigilators about needed accommodations.

Hours of work will be 15 hours per week with opportunity for up to 24 hours per week, across all Academic semesters between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday – Friday, with weekend shifts on a rotational basis.

Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required. It is anticipated that this position will meet the needs of the department through a fully remote work arrangement.

Responsibilities:
  • Reviews documentation provided by students from their home institution about accommodations that have been used previously to ensure they conform to expected standards of the MTP program.
  • Reviews medical documentation and determines appropriate testing accommodations for students who do not have an acceptable accommodation letter.
  • Offers reassurance to applicants who are highly apprehensive about the Math Proficiency Test, and where this may be intensified by an underlying disability.
  • Engages with other accommodations professionals to ensure that accommodation needs are properly addressed (e.g. ASL interpreters, note takers / scribes, etc.).
  • Declines requests for accommodation when the student does not have a disability, when the requested accommodation does not match the documented functional limitations, or when the accommodation would result in undue hardship.
  • Conducts appointments with students by telephone and virtually to discuss their needs, clarify process, and build consensus about accommodations.
  • Refers students who have been assessed as not qualifying for accommodations to appropriate support services.
  • Obtains consent to consult with the accessibility office at the student’s home institution or their health care provider to clarify functional limitations as needed.
  • Communicates required accommodations to the test centre staff who will invigilate the accommodated test.
  • Consults with test centre staff and the Manager of Accessible Learning as needed about unusual accommodation requests.
  • Explains concepts about accommodations that may be difficult for students to understand (e.g. universal design and how the test centre experience might be different from what they have experienced previously).
  • Works in collaboration with the MPT Manager around procedures, answers to general inquiries, and partnerships with test centers at other institutions.
  • Uploads documentation received by students to the electronic file system; and documents interactions with students in the electronic file system.
  • Collaborates with MPT proctors and invigilators who provide customer service, particularly those who provide services in French, to discuss accommodations and other relevant communication sharing.
  • Tracks test bookings with EQAO, reaches out to students about the accommodation process, and develops procedures for managing large volumes of details.
  • Develops procedures that ensure consistency when working with numerous stakeholders, and that minimize the chances of errors.
  • Develops processes for triaging and managing large volumes of inquiries.
  • Anticipates needs and develops appropriate strategies for communicating with the test centres at partner colleges across the province, and the accessibility offices at universities that offer teacher training programs.
  • Develops resources for answering frequently asked questions.
  • Participates in MPT team meetings and meetings with EQAO, when required, to support communication and process development.
  • Identifies opportunities to improve workflow efficiency.
  • Provides back-up customer service support when required.
Qualifications:
  • Three-year Diploma/Degree in Education, Social Work, Psychology, or related field is required.
  • Three years of relevant practical experience is required.
  • In-depth understanding of the accommodations process and related legislation.
  • Ability to exercise critical thinking, good judgement and problem-solving.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to quickly analyze information in order to provide the most appropriate response, referral, or resource.
  • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, handling sensitive and confidential information, and using discretion when responding to inquiries for service.
