Managing Editor

The Dalhousie Gazette is a student-run newspaper based in Halifax, Nova Scotia at Dalhousie

University. We are proud to be the oldest campus paper in North America and have published

consistently since 1868. We publish stories significant to people both on campus and in the wider

The Gazette is hiring a Managing Editor for the 2024-2025 publishing year. The Managing Editor

supports the Editor-in-Chief in overseeing published content with the Dal Gazette and leading the

Gazette’s editorial team.

The responsibilities of the Managing Editor are as follows:

1. Coordinating editorial priorities and goals with the Editor-in-Chief.

2. Leading the editorial team through meetings, the communication of priorities, and other

necessary duties.

3. Coordinating all content for print and online, including the assignment of duties and vetting

of work, and with the page designer - which could involve the Managing Editor sometimes

producing content themself.

4. Overseeing the Gazette’s Wordpress page, including posting content on the site.

5. Final call on all content published with the Gazette, alongside the Editor-in-Chief.

6. Managing and maintaining communication with all editorial staff.

7. Training staff and continuing to mentor them throughout the year.

8. Assisting with the delivery of physical newspaper copies around Dalhousie campus where

9. Contributing to discussions on how to improve the Gazette’s editorial product.

10. Any other duties determined by the Board of Directors.

The Managing Editor role will span 9 months with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2024 and

an expected 20-hour work week. The Managing Editor is expected to be available for

communication with staff and volunteers on an ongoing basis unless otherwise communicated.

The Managing Editor will be paid a base salary of $12,000 for the year (about $1,333.33 per month),

4% vacation pay plus any bonuses at the discretion of the Board. Distribution of pay may be subject

to change, but total compensation will remain the same. Please note that all staff salaries are

currently under review by the Gazette Board of Directors and may be subject to increases if deemed

appropriate.

The Managing Editor must:

1. be either a part-time or full-time student at Dalhousie or the University of King’s College,

and a member of its respective student union;

2. not a representative on the Dalhousie Student Union Council, Board of Governors or Senate.

3. Preferably have Gazette experience, with editor experience preferred.
