The Director of Engineering is responsible for the overall technical infrastructure and engineering processes of the Vancouver location. Overseeing a local team of Engineers, this position is at the helm of the department ensuring top tier support for artists and for system configuration, support, maintenance and deployment for our Dailies, Editorial and Color/Finishing infrastructure and workflows. Working with counterparts throughout the Picture Shop global family and the SVP of Global Technology, this is a crucial strategic role to mould and shape the technology infrastructure of the Vancouver Studio and help define new company-wide technology.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Studio Management:

  • Manage all aspects of Technology Services including infrastructure, working practices, regulations and client requirements with the key objective to align Technology Services to meet the needs of the broader business.
  • Contribute to strategic direction and feed operational and technology requirements into the annual business plan and budget.
  • Liaise with all internal stakeholders to understand their requirements and develop fit-for-purpose solutions, maximising the efficiency and effectiveness of the facility.
  • Manage and report all Technology related expenditure in accordance with approved Budgets and required metrics.
  • Manage communication flow to / from and within the Technology Services team, leading team meetings and proactively contributing to other meetings involving Technology Services.
  • Constantly research new and different technologies, software, formats and market trends and make recommendations to advance Streamland’s competitive position.

Project Planning and Management:

  • Develop project plans for installing, upgrading, relocating and decommissioning equipment and infrastructure. Agree on project objectives, costs and timelines with the project team. Coordinate and execute all Technology Services related project tasks on time and on budget.

Supplier / Partner Relationships:

  • Manage existing and develop new vendor relationships, define the SLA’s and monitor vendor compliance with the SLA’s. Investigate and implement actions to procure vendors at lower cost and minimize all costs at all available opportunities. Raise PO requests and authorize invoices where appropriate.

Pipeline Management:

  • Liaise closely with Production and Operations to design, oversee, monitor and scale the end to end operational and technical pipelines.
  • Ensure Pipeline is consistent, repeatable and where appropriate automated, with the ability to customise to meet specific Project demands.
  • Identify enhancements and developments to optimize the effectiveness and pipeline efficiency.
  • Where possible ensure pipeline is globally aligned for consistency, compatibility and integration purposes.

Team Management / Team Building:

  • Proactively manage and mentor the Technology Services/Engineering team, including recruitment, performance, training, appraisals, objective setting, overtime, absenteeism and dismissals if appropriate.
  • Maintain a skills matrix, promote multi-skilling, cross-training and upskilling opportunities to increase Technology Services skills and flexibility.
  • Gather feedback from Production and Operations, investigate and resolve any client or employee complaints regarding Technology Services and take steps to minimize complaints.
  • Set response times and quality targets and monitor the reactive Technology support provided to the facilities.
  • Ensure all engineering tasks and projects are completed with a high level of quality and stakeholder satisfaction.
  • Build a culture that exhibits clear understanding of service and support needs for each area of the business and a high level of individual accountability. Enforce a ‘team’ culture and collaborative working environment including documenting and sharing knowledge and processes with other members of the Streamland engineering team.

Operational Management:

  • Ensure that all operational areas are fit for purpose, reporting downtime or discrepancies.
  • Ensure that all equipment is well maintained and operational.
  • Work closely with Production to resolve problems or plan upgrades.
  • Repair and recover from technology failures, coordinating and communicating with key internal stakeholders and clients as required.

Qualifications:

  • Deep knowledge of the technology and data workflow of a large high-end, file and cloud-based postproduction facility involved in Studio Level Features (including pipelines, systems, networks, software development and automation) and how to apply and manage that to ensure a correct and successful final creative output. This knowledge will allow a ‘hands on’ approach to be taken when required.
  • Able to define and document relevant technology strategies aligned to Business initiatives.
  • Demonstrable experience of creating efficiencies within Digital pipelines leading to increased quality of output and reductions in operational costs where applicable.
