About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Assistant Manager, Maintenance & Operations the 3rd Class Chief Power Engineer has full technical responsibility for the safe, efficient, continuous operation and maintenance of the steam boiler plant, hot water boiler plant(s), chiller plant(s), and pressure equipment, covered under the Plant Registrations at the Hants Community Hospital and Cobequid Community Health Centre. Per Nova Scotia Power Engineers Regulations, this role acts as the shift engineer when on site at Cobequid Community Health Center, in addition to duties as Chief.

The 3rd Class Chief Power Engineer is responsible for review and sign off of daily notations in the power plant logbook in accordance with Nova Scotia Power Engineers Regulations, and provides technical direction to engineers on other shifts
The 3rd Class Chief Power Engineer is responsible to ensure that boiler and refrigeration plants meet or exceed the standards of the Nova Scotia Department of Labour, and is the primary point of contact with the local Nova Scotia Department of Labour Inspector with respect to regulated equipment, including maintenance and changes, and advises the Assistant Manager, Maintenance & Operations on boiler and refrigeration plant maintenance requirements and improvements.

When on shift, the 3rd Class Chief Power Engineer acts as shift engineer, and is required to complete rounds of building mechanical rooms and must have a basic understanding of other building maintenance trades as he inspects various mechanical systems, ex: medical gas/air/vacuum system, air handling units (ventilation), heating systems, fire water pumping system. The 3rd Class Power Engineer is also responsible for on demand building maintenance calls at the Cobequid Community Health Center, and plant silent hour calls.

About You
  • Grade 12 required.
  • Designation as a Standardized Nova Scotia 3rd Class Power Engineer (required).
  • Valid Nova Scotia driver's license is required.
  • Three years' experience in a high pressure plant (steam), building operations, and preventive maintenance programs required.
  • Travel to other sites is required and must have access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Good knowledge of the operation of boilers, chillers, air handlers, pumps, piping systems, water treatment, and other electrical machinery.
  • Strong safety track record and mindset is a must.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety codes.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Competencies in other languages preferred; French an asset.

  • Permanent Full- Time (100% Position), 75 Hours Bi-Weekly
Compensation and Incentives

$27.43 - $32.65 Hourly
