How Clinical Externs support our teams at Grand River Hospital:

Grand River Hospital is seeking nursing, paramedic, undergraduate medical, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy students to join the Clinical Extern Program. The Clinical Externs are unregulated healthcare providers who will be working as part of an interprofessional team and provide patient-centred care under the direct and/or indirect supervision of an identified Health Professional.

The Clinical Extern will practice in a manner consistent with the organizational Mission, Vision, and Values in alignment with the outlined job description. The Clinical Externs will be hired on a contract part-time basis, and the hours of work will be determined based on individual availability and unit needs, which will include day/evening and weekend shifts. Duties include:

  • Practicing under the direct and/or indirect supervision of the Healthcare Professional (e.g. RN, RPN, paramedic, etc.) in a manner consistent with GRH Mission, Vision, policies and procedures and in accordance with the CNO Practice Guideline for Working with Unregulated Care Providers.
  • Carrying out or assisting with activities of daily living with the goal of supporting and optimizing patient independence and functioning.

At Grand River Hospital, our Clinical Externs must be actively enrolled in one of the following:

  • BScN or BN program: Any year
  • PN program: Any year
  • CNO approved program - EPIEN: Any year
  • Occupational Therapy: Any year
  • Paramedic program: 2nd year
  • Physiotherapy: Any year
  • MD program: Final year; Recent Canadian Medical Graduates awaiting start of residency

*** Applicants holding a current certificate of competence in their regulated health profession are not eligible for the Clinical Extern Program ***
