Status: Part-time (10 days/month for a total of 240 days over two years)

Type: Contractor

Location: Remote / home-based

Eligibility: Open to candidates of any nationality

Employer: Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan (CW4WAfghan)

Duration: 24-month contract

Apply by: Open until filled

Job Description:

The Curriculum and Assessment Specialist is a contractor role with CW4WAfghan’s online secondary school for Afghan girls, Darakht-e Danesh (DD) Classroom, which launched in 2022. As we prepare to expand our school, currently grades 7-9, to include grades 10-12, in partnership with a Canadian online school, we are seeking a talented individual with expertise in curriculum and assessment development at the secondary level, to support our teachers and help us ensure a smooth transition for our students when they make the leap from a Dari/Farsi language of instruction to English in grade 10. We are looking to enhance our current middle school curriculum, to introduce new subjects, and to help prepare students for success in high school. This is a unique opportunity to work with a multi-national and multicultural team working together to restore the right to education to those to whom it’s denied.

Job Duties and Key Responsibilities:

  • Using a standard curriculum revision and review process, conduct a curriculum review of grade 7-9 subjects, to align more closely with the Ontario high school curriculum. The review should include a gender and inclusion audit.
  • Determine a phased approach to curriculum revisions, and lead a systematic revision process. Revisions will include online curriculum implementation resources.
  • Based on the curriculum review, identify which subjects require enhanced teaching and learning resources that are suitable for online learning and in line with revised curriculum. Identify open resource materials to adapt for this purpose.
  • Lead adaptation of an existing Canadian grade 7-9 fine arts curriculum to the Afghan context, and together with the TPD specialist, design PD for specific teachers responsible for the curriculum.
  • Review and design enhancements to the assessment and evaluation process used in Grade 7-9 subjects, to align more closely with the Ontario secondary curriculum. The review should include a gender and inclusion audit.
  • Together with the TPD Specialist, design and deliver virtual professional development to Grade 7-9 teachers (in “networked improvement communities”) to adopt new gender-sensitive curriculum, pedagogic practices, assessment and teaching and learning resources.
  • Provide ongoing technical support to grade 7-9 teachers as they deliver updated curriculum, and use new learning resources and assessment techniques.
  • Serve as main curriculum and assessment liaison between our school and our partner Canadian school
  • Collaborate between teachers and the technology team to incorporate innovative teaching methods and educational technologies.
  • Together with the TPD Specialist, design a support program for at-risk students.

Qualifications:

  • Proven expertise in curriculum development and assessment at the secondary level, preferably in a global context
  • Work experience in a comparable contractor or employment role
  • Minimum Bachelor degree in educational technology, distance education, or related field; graduate level education preferred
  • Results-oriented, and can work independently
  • Able to solve problems and troubleshoot solutions with a can-do attitude, juggling competing demands
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Passion for making the right to learn a reality for all and for the power of education to transform futures

Preferred/helpful:

  • Knowledge of Afghan or regional sectoral context
  • Comfortable working within cross-cultural teams
  • Experience working on shared drives such as GoogleDrive

About CW4WAfghan:

Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan (CW4WAfghan) exists to make the right to learn a reality.

We have trained 10,000 teachers, established 300 libraries and science labs, and established a digital library with tens of thousands of downloads each month.

As of August 2021, Afghanistan became the only country in the world to ban women and girls from receiving an education. Working in partnership with Afghan women, CW4WAfghan has adapted programs to offer free virtual courses to connect thousands of Afghan women and girls with quality education. Our programs transform lives, promote gender equality, and uphold the right to learn.
