We are currently seeking a Senior Payroll & Benefits Specialist to join our Payroll and Benefits team in one of our hubs in Calgary, Burnaby or Toronto and can be performed in a hybrid capacity.

Who you are:

Our Senior Payroll & Benefits Specialist role is for someone who is highly organized and solution-oriented. A subject matter expert for our payroll function ensuring compliance with regulations across geographies. It's crucial to have a keen eye for detail and the ability to stay organized in a fast-paced environment.

Being a problem solver is a key quality for this role. Payroll can sometimes be complex, and unexpected issues may arise. You'll need to be able to think on your feet, find creative solutions, and handle any challenges that come your way with a positive attitude. You will also provide thought leadership and mentorship to our Payroll Clerks.

Lastly, you need to be a team player and have a genuine passion for helping others. This role involves working closely with employees to address their payroll and benefits needs, so having a friendly and approachable demeanor is crucial.

What you'll work on:
  • Managing the administration of payroll for all company employees and executing payroll reconciliation reports and schedules in a timely and accurate manner;
  • Maintaining the payroll records in our HRIS system, as well as making recommendations to improve the scalability and efficiency of internal payroll;
  • Know and be able to assist in answering Benefit questions about extended Health and Dental plans with a good understanding of our benefit processes;
  • Reconciling payroll and managing the flow of information to the general ledger to ensure costs are allocated to the correct account and cost center;
  • Preparation of provincial and federal reporting and remittances (i.e. WCB, WSIB, EHT, ROEs, etc.);
  • Preparing year-end reconciliations and tax form preparation (T4s, T4As, W2, Form 2220s, WCB, WSIB, EHT, etc.);
  • Preparing documents for annual audit and other ad-hoc external payroll and tax audits;
  • Reviewing the information for new hires, resignations and terminations and ensuring it is correct (i.e. calculations, letters, and ROE);
  • Creating and maintaining operating manuals for all payroll and insurance processes;
  • Create and assist with documentation and updating Standard Operating Procedures;
  • May perform other related and ancillary duties as assigned (special projects and initiatives).
What you bring:
  • At least 3-5 years of Payroll experience;
  • Know existing and research new legislation, enforcing adherence to requirements and advising management on needed actions;
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of excel and the use of formulas;
  • Ability to teach and knowledge transfer with junior payroll clerks.
  • Come to work every day with a can-do attitude, ready to find and implement solutions to our challenges;
  • Be reliable source of knowledge and a resource for our employees and junior members of the team.
Bonus points if you have:
  • Experience using Workday (preferred)
  • Professional payroll designation (PCP or PLP)
