Calgary, Canada Pembina Institute Full time

Position: Senior Director, Communications
Organization: Pembina Institute
Location: Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto or Ottawa

Who we are

At the Pembina Institute, it’s all hands on deck and it has been for the last 40 years.

Our 55+ person team, distributed across the country, are passionate and dedicated, but we don't sweat the small stuff. We’re too busy tackling one of the most important issues of a generation: Canada’s clean energy transition.

In that transition, we don’t leave anyone behind, and believe each member of our team plays a critical role in achieving our goals. We ensure equity but promote individuality. We lead with curiosity — challenging our own ideas and limiting beliefs, being open to diversity of thought and opinion. We use evidence-based thinking to inform our recommendations to decision-makers and understand that to make long-lasting changes, we need to take a practical approach when collaborating with others.

Our commitment to responsible development, and our “tough, but fair” approach, using research, consulting and convening, gives us credibility with decision makers whose actions today are setting the direction for the planet. Are you ready to join us?

Meet the team

The Communications team sets the strategy for communications to advance the evolving priorities of the Pembina Institute’s policy areas and objectives. They develop processes, best practices and resources for communications to ensure the organization’s overall values and brand is represented. The team supports the communications work of every part of the organization by maintaining quality control of written and visual materials and executing external outreach strategies through digital platforms and tools.

The opportunity

Reporting to the Deputy Executive Director, we are looking for a Senior Director, Communications to lead, direct and manage the Pembina Institute’s communication strategies, broadening the impact of our programs and oversee organizational messaging. You will work collaboratively as part of the senior leadership team to ensure that the organization effectively communicates to key stakeholders. We’ll lean on you to establish annual plans and budgets for communications activities that advance the Pembina Institute’s mission, strategic plan, brand and reputation, determining effective digital platforms and internal processes to leverage influence through storytelling.

Your key responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the senior leadership to develop and implement communications strategies that will broaden program reach and deepen impact, in alignment with the Pembina Institute’s mission and values.
  • Manage human resource responsibilities for communications team members.
  • Provide strategic communications support and mentorship to cross-functional communications roles within the organization.
  • Develop crisis communications and issues management strategies for the organization.
  • Provide preparation and training to leaders, board members, and communications team for public speaking engagements, press releases, op-eds, and keynote presentations/speeches.
  • Develop and oversee the use and standards for the organization's design work for all print and digital collateral, acting as an overall brand manager.
  • Provide executive oversight for the organization's website.
  • Oversee the digital content strategy across channels through email, website traffic, and social media platforms for building brand and issue awareness.
  • Lead conceptualization and oversee organization-wide training of communications materials and areas.
  • Develop and manage the communications budget including the oversight for communications consultants and vendors.
  • Monitor and evaluate the overall performance of the Pembina Institute’s communications activities, providing feedback and recommendations for improvement.

What we’re looking for

You have experience developing and executing communications strategies and plans, using your skills and experience in media relations, digital engagement, popular communications, social media, online publishing, and multimedia. You demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence through your leadership practices to motivate and influence people and change. You will use your communications expertise to build community and advocacy campaigns for the organization, developing the Pembina Institute’s institutional brand and voice in line with industry standards and best practices.

You also have:

  • Minimum of 10 years of professional strategic communication experience, including solid experience developing and executing communications strategies for a similar organization or industry.
  • Minimum of five years of experience with progressive management and leadership that involves mentorship of direct and indirect reports.
  • Post-secondary education in communications, media relations, journalism, marketing or related field. A combination of work experience and education may be considered.
  • A strong track record of positioning an organization to achieve tangible outcomes in a competitive communications environment.
  • Demonstrated experience working within the Canadian media market and with media outlet in Canada.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of current trends and best practices in digital media/social media.
  • Familiarity with provincial and federal policy and politics, particularly with respect to Canadian energy and environmental issues.
  • Prior experience and personal commitment to environmental sustainability are considered assets, as is French language proficiency.

The hiring range for the position is $108,212 to $129,855 annually based on a 37.5-hour work week, with a range maximum of $151,497. Within this range, individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, related experience, education and/or training, and internal equity.

We know that in order to meet these ambitious goals, our people are the core.
