Reports to: Laboratory Supervisor / Laboratory Manager

Department: Organics

Location: Burnaby, B.C.

Basic Purpose:

Responsible for carrying out analysis of environmental samples in strict compliance with the requirements of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Health and Safety policies. Meets quality and TAT specifications required by the client and ensures samples are analyzed within holding time requirements.

Key Accountability/Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure a high level of accuracy and perform analysis utilizing complex instrumentation such as GC-MS/FID and LC/MS/MS and HPLC requiring analytical thinking and decision making.
  2. Carry out routine maintenance and calibration of instruments.
  3. Provide supervisor/manager with updates on workstation status including advance notification of any delays.
  4. Review LIMS summary reports to plan and organize daily work.
  5. Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) when conducting work.
  6. Perform sample preparation and procedures prior to analysis as described in the test methods and review daily workload to accommodate daily rushes.
  7. Prepare reagents and calibration standards as required for the analysis.
  8. Interpret data, calculate final results and enter data into LIMS.
  9. Carry out quality control procedures and recognize when data is unacceptable using guidelines stated in the test methods or in departmental standard operating procedures.
  10. Identify any non-routine samples and seek guidance on procedures for handling.
  11. Meet quality and TAT specifications required by the client and ensure samples are analyzed within holding time requirements.
  12. Identify and communicate procedural non-conformances to Supervisor.
  13. Employ proper laboratory techniques to minimize risk of mislabeling, sample mix-up and cross-contamination between samples and other materials.
  14. Perform method validation studies and summarize data for method validation studies in accordance with SOPs and validation plans, including accuracy/precision, MDLs, MUs etc.
  15. Participate in internal/external audits, and contribute to investigations/corrective actions.
  16. Participate in developing, reviewing and revising general Work Instructions, method SOPs, and other controlled documents.
  17. Adhere to Bureau Veritas Code of Ethics Policy.

Skills and Knowledge:

  1. Science Technical Diploma or B.Sc. or equivalent.
  2. Working knowledge of the operation of analytical instruments including HPLC, LC/MS/MS and GCMS/FID experience would be an asset.
  3. Strong science background and experience in laboratory practices.
  4. Competent in reviewing analytical procedures and practices.
  5. Knowledge of Quality Assurance Principles and Quality Control Procedures.
  6. Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  7. High degree of accuracy.
  8. Positive outlook with an ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  9. Good time-management, communication, multi-tasking and priority setting skills.
  10. Ability to adapt to a changing environment.
  11. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Working Conditions:

  1. High level of work production in a fast-paced lab environment.
  2. May require flexible working hours, overtime and shift work.
  3. Hazardous materials are handled using established safety procedures and appropriate PPE.
  4. Some lifting and carrying.
