About the role
On-site | Seasonal | Junior Level
Working as part of the GCMS team in the Trace Organics Department, the laboratory analyst is responsible for the handling of data, batch management, time management, quality control and turnaround time. You will use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality and adhere to safe laboratory practices by working in accordance with the ALS Health and Safety Program.
**Key Responsibilities**:
- Analysis of volatile/semivolatile parameters using split-splitless/headspace/Thermal
- Desorption GCMS. Acquisition and calculations are performed using GCMS Chemstation and Target softwares;
- Daily tasks will include GC maintenance and basic troubleshooting;
- Extractions in the lab, as needed;
- Work-scheduling for a particular instrument or analytical method - includes the use of LIMS;
- Prepare all required reagents, standards, reference materials, etc.;
- Carry out all required data processing (i.e. calculations, data review, data entry, archival, etc. Including the use of ALSTools and Seedpak);
- Perform all required quality control procedures;
- Carry out all required record-keeping & documentation;
- Communicate with the Client Services staff as required;
- Conduct work following all required safety protocols;
- Deliver accurate results to our clients in a timely manner;
- Technical decision making for non-routine, complex analyses or matrices;
- Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
- Other duties as required by Supervisor or Team Lead.
**About you**:
- Proven workload management ability;
- Able to work under the pressure of high sample volumes and to meet deadlines;
- Proficient computer skills including MS Word and MS Excel;
- Organized, detail oriented and highly motivated;
- Able to work independently;
- Strong team playing skills;
- Excellent English communication skills (written and verbal);
- Solid foundation in quality control understanding and data “batch troubleshooting” required.
**Required Qualifications**:
- Technical Diploma or Degree in Chemistry, or related discipline;
- One year organics extraction experience preferred;
- Familiarity with gas chromatography.
**Physical Demands**:
- Ability to lift up to thirty pounds;
- Ability to sit or stand for much of the working day;
- Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks.
